This is a nice book. Other books worth considering:

American Minimal Music by Wim Mertens.
He tends to attach political significance to musical gestures, but an important book.
Writings on Music by Steve Reich.
All the things Reich has ever written about his art.
Silence by John Cage.
Not contemporary, but an excellent book looking into the mind of Cage and how he thought about ...well, about life, the universe and everything.
Musicophilia by Oliver Sacks.
Yes, the Oliver Sacks who wrote "Awakenings" and "The Man who Mistook his wife for a Hat".
