Intet,

Yes, Coltrane and Tyner were really tight for a few years - a really groundbreaking crew imho. Much as I would like to, I find it impossible to replicate completely Tyner's style - It is just so original. Besides, I am of the conviction that the hallmark of a true musician is he/she having their own unique style/voice - not a copy of another musician's style/voice.

ps. Ron Carter and Brian Bromberg are at the forefront of Double Bass use in Jazz.

sir Corno Dolce :tiphat:

If you enjoy McCoy Tyner in what you call percussion piano, you would probably also enjoy Michel Camilo, latin-jazz-piano inspired music.

The Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi on his trio double album "Live In Japan", by CamJazz Records, recorded in 2004, released in 2007.

The musicians:

Enrico Pieranunzi - piano
Marc Johnson - double bass
Joey Baron - drums

The same trio has recorded the music by Morricone, CamJazz Records 2002.

Enrico Pieranunzi, born in Rome 1949 inspired by the late American GIANT jazz pianist Bill Evans, began his jazz career playing rather romanticly. But he was educated in classical music first at the University of Rome. Then he taught the classical piano to students and then, like the late Michel Petrucciani, it was in jazz he made himself an international name as a brilliant pianist, and later in the 1980´s, he became the main man and prime organizer of the International Pedagogic Jazz Festival in the Italian city Siena.

Enrico and the late Chet Baker (trumpet and vocals) recorded two duo albums, one of them is "The Heart Of The Ballad", recorded with Philology Records 1988, then another duo with Lee Konitz (alto saxophone) on "Solitude", by Philology Records in 1989 and a duo with Phil Woods (alto saxophone) on "Elise", Philology Records 1991.

Most of his recent trio albums have the American jazz musicians Marc Johnson on the double bass and Joey Baron or Paul Motian on drums.

For Mat!!

Talking about Michel Petrucciani. I found this Live-album in Florence "Dreyfus Night In Paris", by Dreyfus Jazz 1994.

There are only three songs on the album, but very long songs:

1. Tutu (by Miles Davis) - 16:36
2. The King Is Gone - 17:19
3. Looking Up - 16:32

Here´s an international cast of top notch jazz musicians:

Michel Petrucciani - piano
Bireli Lagrene - guitars
Kenny Garrett - alto and soprano saxophone
Marcus Miller - el. bass and bass clarinet
Lenny White - drums

These guys realy know how to make it "rock", so to speak.

Intet,

Thanks for sharing. I know this album very well. I've been happy owner for almost a year.

If you are really into his music you should check out his album Promenade With Duke (1993).

That's what I'm listenig to right now

Love you Mat :tiphat::clap::trp::trp: and your musical interests in jazz as for Michel Petrucciani.

"Promenade With Duke", regarding Duke Ellington. The album where MP plays solo piano. Got it my dear admirable friend Mat.

And these MP albums too:

"Michel Petrucciani Trio", 1981.
"Michel Plays Petrucciani", 1988.
"Playground", 1991.
"Marvelous", 1994.
"Both Worlds", 1997.
"Trio In Tokyo", 1999.

And then I have MP with The Manhatten Project, Capitol Records 1990, the name of the album as well feat:

Wayne Shorter - tenor and soprano saxophone
MP - piano
Gil Goldstein and Pete Levin - keyboards
Stanley Clarke - double bass
Lenny White - drums

Incidently Mat, looking this afternoon among my older cassette tapes, I have four more older albums with Michel Petrucciani. They are:

"Music"
"Live"
"Trio Pianism" (MP, Wayne Shorter - tenor and soprano saxophones and Palle Danielsson - double bass)
"Power of Three" - Live at The Montreux Jazz Festival 1986. (MP and Jim Hall - guitars and Wayne Shorter)

Besides those already mentioned MP has recorded 3 or 4 more solo piano albums. At least two of them live, but I only have "Promenade With Duke".

Btw. I have seen you have entered "Dreyfus Night In Paris", severel times since January 2008, that´s good - keep ém coming Mat (lols).

Check your PM, I got the August 13 mail from you to me on my private e-mail outside the MIMF, but then I was down south in Italy. So SMILE my friend - Don´t worry, be happy!!

Figures!! And then you enjoy Eliane Elias as well. Me too.

I have "Brazilian Classics" 16 Brazilian songs by various artists, Eliane Elias: Capitol Records 1997. Remastered by Blue Note Records 2003.

She is an awesome pianist, but can certainly sing as well. Some of her best piano work though, I believe was with either Marc Johnson and the former American jazz group Steps Ahead.

"Schizophrenia", the title of the album by Wayne Shorter, Capitol Records 1967, remastered by Blue Note Records 1995.

The musicians:

Wayne Shorter - tenor and soprano saxophone
Herbie Hancock - piano
James Spaulding - alto saxophone and flute
Curtis Fuller - trombone
Ron Carter - double bass
Joe Chambers - drums

AWESOME album, and the sound is not that bad.

Wayne Shorter on another album "Footprints - Live", by Verve Music 2000.

The first edition of the album and the song "Footprints" was a collection of songs and the groups, where Wayne Shorter participated from 1957-2000, by the BMG Records.

The musicians on the new album "Footprints - Live" are:

Wayne Shorter - tenor and soprano saxophone
Danilo Perez - piano
John Patitucci - double bass
Brian Blade - drums, percussion

Great album, already a jazz bestsellar.

Cæcilie Norby, the best Danish female jazz vocalist IMHO on her album "Cæcilie Norby", by EMI Medley DK./Blue Note Records 1995.

Her husband the double bass and el. bass player, cellist and keyboardian Lars Danielsson as usual has produced the album, but for once does not participate on any instruments.

The musicians:

CN - vocals
Niels Lan Doky and Lars Jansson - piano
Ben Basiakov - Hammond B3 organ
Jacob Fischer - guitars
Ray Margitza and Sonny Robinson - tenor and soprano saxophones
Randy Brecker - trumpet and flugelhorn
Lennart Ginman - double bass
Billy Hart - drums
Jakob Andersen - percussion

Mostly top notch Danish jazz musicians, Lars Jansson from Sweden and Margitza, Robinson. Brecker and Hart are Americans.

The jazz voice of Cæcilie Norby reminds me a great deal of the voice of the American female Cassandra Wilson, who I attended the concert with during the Copenhagen Jazz Festival in July 2008.

The Danish Radio Big Band, famous throughout Europe and in America, on the album "A Little Bit Of Duke", recorded and released by Dacapo Records 1995.

When the US musicians Carla Bley (conductor, and playing piano and organ) and Steve Swallow (el. bass) were to record a new album a couple of years ago, they asked specificly for the Danish Radio Big Band to play with them in Denmark, because as Carla Bley later said in an interview as to why she and Steve chose this particular band? Carla Bley answered very short: "Why? The Danish Radio Big Band is the best Big Band, we know.", which should be a guarantee for the highly quallified musicians.

So here´s The Danish Radio Big Band alone, but the band is identical to the band playing with Bley and Swallow, except Ole Kock Hansen is the conductor. OKH personal friend since childhood and fellow musician (piano) to the late Danish GIANT on the double bass, NHØP, who had a long career with this Big Band himself, while Palle Mikkelborg (trumpet and flugelhorn) was the conductor back in the 1970-80´s.

The musicians:

Nicolaj Bentzon - piano
Anders "Chico" Lindvall - guitars
Jesper Thilo - soloist on the tenor saxophone
Thomas Ovesen - double bass
Jonas Johansen - drums and the band leader
Ethan Weisgard - American immigrant playing percussion

and then 4 saxophones, 4 trombones, 4 trumpets, 2 flugelhorns, 2 flutes, 2 clarinets.

Of course the music composed by the legend in jazz Duke Ellington is awesome on this album with songs like Cotton Tail, Bojangles, Come Sunday, Rockin´ in Rhytm, Blue Light, The Mooche and the title song A Little Bit Of Duke etc. etc.

Back at my favourite of all jazz musicians, the American phenomena Keith Jarrett on his first ECM production, the solo piano album (not improvised), recorded in the studio in Munich, Germany (rare for Keith, though) "Facing You", by the ECM Records 1972.

I catch myself, every time I listen to this AWESOME debut on the solo piano by Keith thinking how extremely well, he played the piano even then 36 years ago.

Opening song "In Front" playing a lot on the low register in a speedy tempo. But on songs like "Lalene" - "My Lady; My Lady", one can hear bits and short pieces of playing, you´ll find on later albums for the Scandinavian Quartet. Funny eh?

My all time favourite song on this debut album by Keith is the last song "Semblence". Rare I get tears in my eyes listening to jazz, but they come every time I listen to this song.

Do African people play jazz?

Of course they do. Here´s one pianist and composer born in Africa with the name Abdullah Ibrahim, born in Cape Town, South Africa 1934, perhaps better known in the jazz world under his other name Dollar Brand.

Abdullah Ibrahim, his original muslim name, on his album "African River", by Enja Records 1989.

The musicians, not all Africans though:

Abdullah Ibrahim - piano
Robin Eubanks - trombone
John Stubblefield/Herbert A. Young - tenor, soprano and alto saxophones, wooden flutes
Howard Johnson - tuba, trumpet and baritone saxophone
Buster Williams - double bass
Brian Adams - drums
