The latest album by the USA jazz guitar phenomena Pat Metheny is called "Day Trip", recorded by NoneSuch 2005 but only released in 2007.

Ten new and older songs for the new trio by Pat Metheny (acoustic and electric guitars) feat. Christian McBride (double bass) and Anthonio Sanchez (drums). The music from this album was partly performed by this trio during the Europe Tour in 2005, but on the album Pat mostly play the electric guitar, not the 42 string Picasso custom built guitar nor the 12 string electric guitar, but there is one song with the guitar synthesizer.

Pat has recorded for the trio 6 times 1976-2007:

1. The debut "Bright Size Life" feat. Jaco Pastorius (el. fretless bass) and Bob Moses (drums) in 1976.
2. "Rejoicing" from 1984 feat. Charlie Haden (double bass) and the late Billy Higgins (drums).
3. In 1990 the trio album "Question & Answer" feat. Dave Holland (double bass) and Roy Haynes (drums).
4. Then in 1999, Pat recorded with Larry Grenadier (double bass) and Bill Stewart (drums) on the album "99-00".
5. To be followed by a double live album with the same "Trio Live" from 2000.
6. "Day Trip", released in 2007 is the number five trio and 6th recording as a trio of Pat Metheny feat. Christian McBride (double bass) and Antonio Sanchez (drums).

Obviously beside the more than 25 albums of The Pat Metheny Group (PMG) often with 4-6 members on various instruments, the small guitar-trio is very different to the PMG albums. Playing in the trio Pat needs a very strong bassist to keep the whole thing together, and he would not find a better bassist for the job than Christian McBride, who also has some of his very best solos on the double bass in his career.

Now for Antonio Sanchez, the very young however most awesomely talented drummer, first with Pat on the album "The Way Up" from 2005, it´s been a great thrill to listen to him in this trio, where Sanchez gets much more space than on the "TWU" album.

Sanchez is the kind of drummer, who continously will surprice you during the 10 songs, never to do the expected drumming. His cymbal work is just AWESOME, and like with both Jack DeJohnette and the former drummers in the PMG Danny Gottlieb and Paul Wertico, Sanchez knows excactly when and how to play up to Pat, freakin´on the electric guitars up and down the neck of the guitar, but also when to join McBride for the backing, while Pat reaches so far unknown borderliner territory on his electric guitars.

This is an AWESOME trio, finally on stock at my house. Songs like "Son Of Thirteen" - "Is This America" and the older song "When We Were Free" do not have any comparison at all, but then Pat Metheny can not be compared to anyone else as a phenomena on the jazz guitar nor as a composer and bandleader to anyone else, I know of - except for John Mclaughlin, IMHO. Funny though that the total playing time on "Day Trip", is excactly the same as on the former album The Way Up - 68:10.

Of course having every Pat Metheny album now, except the album recorded in Poland with Maria Jopek, feeling totally embraced and overwhelmingly happy, but since Pat and I both were born in that very innovative year of 1954, he realy owes me to come to Denmark and play live sooner than soon. I would enjoy to shake his hand in respect.

Call it coincidence or whatever you want, but I happen to have this album Pat recorded with Anna Maria Jopek. It is called Upojenie. If you are interested in having this album too, send me PM and we will work it out somehow:)

Pat Metheny on his spectacular trio album "Question & Answer", by Geffen Records 1990.

The best songs for this trio evolving while playing "Solar" - "Question & Answer" - "Change Of Heart" - "All The Things You Are" and "Old Folks", for intellectual exquisite freakin´ jazz freaks.

The musicians:

Pat Metheny - guitars, guitar synthesizer
Dave Holland - double bass
Roy Haynes - drums

This album was the first thing, I thought about when listening the first time to the latest trio album from Pat Metheny "Day Trip".

Off topic:

My dear hard working Polish buddy Mat :tiphat: I will find the album "Upojenie" by Pat and Anna Maria Jopek in Copenhagen, I am sure. There are still a lot of second hand record stores in Copenhagen, and I am (hopefully) going with my old school buddy Rene´, who knows everyone of them.

I just got "Day Trip" myself Mat, after waiting excitedly for months. But as always from you dear friend, I am forever grateful for what you have already sent to me. I hope, when I/we leave tomorrow for the Copenhagen Jazz Festival that my old school buddy Rene´ will join me.

There are some minor unimportant problems on his account, you know women. Or rather one particular WOMAN in the household of his, who do not nessesarely consider 9 days in Copenhagen as a feast for two old school buddies. It´s a MAN thing (lols), we both told her, she smiled. But I guess Rene´ has done MAN things before, not nessesarely like going to Copenhagen in peace to celebrate great jazz musicians?

But I am sure, after I visited them both yesterday for a nice dinner, showing her the tour card, I bought for him (to put the pressure on her (lols)), that he and I will go tomorrow.

As an adult with two lost marriages behind me, I haven´t forgotten how to sweeten women with a heavy beautiful bucket of flowers when arriving. It always melts the ice. In fact, I told her yesterday, it would be good for Rene´ to get away from Aalborg for some time to figure out, how to create a new buisness instead of the record store, he used to have!!:grin:

She was actually quite possitive, remembering the bucket of wild flowers from the fields, which now had been put to a huge vase and said: So you want me to trust my man with you Lars? Of course as humbly, gently and respectfully and completely honestly, I could only tell her the truth: Yes! Rene´ will be safe with me. She turned her eyes towards the ceiling: Right!!

Anyways, I am like a child before Christmas, I can´t wait to go by the A-train at 12:05 PM tomorrow, with my old backpack with a sleeping bag and some extra clothes and a toothbrush, what more does a MAN and a real jazz freak need, except for an open mind and good spirits.

Pat Metheny - acoustic 6-12 stríng guitars, electric guitars, 15 string harp guitar, el. bass.

The songs "New Chautauqua" - "Country Poem" - "Hermitage" and "Sueno Con Mexico" are my favourites.

Hehe, it would be so cool to go there with you, and listen to all those musicians. From the link you provided few posts earlier it seems the festival is going to be really a big event, worth attending to.

What I have already sent you is nothing when compared to what I still can send you:grin::grin::grin:. Anyway, glad you liked it all.

I totally understand your excitement:). If you've got a camera, it'd be nice if you took some photos and shared them with us. Of course after the festival is over and all the positive emotions are back in its safe level;)

Have fun!!!!

Honestly, I've never heard of it. The fact is, though, I do know some of the songs from it, like Don't speak or Only water, and of course do like 'em:grin:.

However, my all time favorite is Anna Maria Jopek's My Best Secret and the song from this album called I nie zobaczy nikt (eng. And no-one will see). You're probably wondering why this particular song? Well, firstly because of the great vocal, and secondly because of the solo of a soprano saxophone:grin:.

Go to the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, stay safe and have fun!!!!!

I promise you we´ll be safe. I mean, what could possibly happen to two very handsome adult males at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2008, except being treated gently by GIANT jazz musicians from all over the world.

We were both born there, and though it´s been quite a while, since my feet have been there, I know Copenhagen like the pocket of my trousers - Rene´ as well. His parents are still alive, so I guess we will visit them at their home. Only this time being an adult, I will respectfully deny to eat fried liver and yellow Sago soup - twice.:grin:

In fact, I reckon, we will not have to pay for any b&b (bed and breakfast), since we both share a lot of adresses of people, who know I (at least) am coming, so whatever not spent on single housing for the night, I will spend on CD´s and a new summer suit made by a taylor from India. I haven´t seen him for years, but I telephoned yesterday, and he remembered me at once. He will messure me, and in three days the summer suit - trousers and dinner jacket (not toxedo though) - will be ready. That for the 1/7 of the price of the same suit in an ordinary shop connected to a taylor.

About pictures Mat, you drive a hard bargain my friend. This Festival will be without cell phones, so check in here at this link and you´ll find everything you need:

Picture 7 in the first link is from the award night of the yearly presentation of the Ben Webster Jazz Prize at Glassalen at the world wide famous amusement park Tivoli given to the two highly recommented musicians the half an half vietnamese/danish brothers Niels Lan Doky (piano, keyboards) and Chris Minh Doky (double bass), who performed both as the duo Doky Brothers and with each their own trio on the night.

Check out the Ben Webster Jazz Prize:

www.benwebster.dk

Chris Minh Doky Trio www.chrisminhdoky.com: featuring the Swede Lars Jansson (piano) and the American drummer Peter Erskine, probably best known from his days with the group Weather Report.

Niels Lan Doky Trio www.nielslandoky.com: featuring the two french musicians Didier Lockwood (violin) and Pierre Boussaguet (double bass) and the great Dane, Alex Riel (drums).

But mostly for the concerts, I am sorry to say that I had to give up the concert by The Charles Lloyd New Quartet for Cassandra Wilson in stead, since they both took place the same date at the same time. So here are the concerts, I attended and from which I will give you some personal views:

On July 6: The Doky Brothers Award Night at Glassalen, Tivoli at 5 PM (look to the above mentioned).

On July 6: The Wayne Shorter Band and the Imani Winds at the Opera around 8 PM. (in walking distance from Tivoli earlier in the afternoon).

On July 7: Saxophone Summit feat. the three Americans Joe Lovano, Dave Liebman and Ravi Coltrane, same venue at the Glassalen, Tivoli at 8 PM.

On July 8: Ornette Coleman Quartet with his highly energetic drumming son Denardo Coleman and two bassists at the Old Stage of the Royal Danish Theater at 8 PM.

On July 10: Cassandra Wilson Quartet at the Old Stage at the Royal Danish Theater at 8 PM.

On July 11: David Murray and his Black Saint Quartet at the Glassalen, Tivoli at 8 PM.

On July 12: The Brad Mehldau Trio at Glassalen, Tivoli at 8 PM.

These were the main events and venues, I personally came to attend, but beside those mentioned we both, Rene and I saw and listened to dozens of other more ordinary jazz bands from Europe and the standard New Orleans Jazz for *dancing in the streets*, like the American rock band The Doobie Brothers once sang it and most of the copenhageners did it throughout the night in some club or restaurent or even the smaller cafe had open to early in the mornings.

The great thing about Copenhagen center is that you have access to all the venues within a 4 miles perimeter, so you might as well use the horses of the apostles, meaning your own feet walking, rather than waiting for a cap or a buss for transportation.

I hope, I will be able to give you some first hand impressions and reviews on the Jazz Festival itself and all the things happening in Copenhagen due to the July 4 to 12. If God and Mat will it, I will be back next year with my great polish friend and the ultimate master of the examed polish bisquit, Mat.

Joey DeFrancesco - It's About time

Rear Admiral Appassionata (Ret.)
So I begin with the half vietnamese/danish - The Doky Brothers awarded with the Ben Webster Prize on July 6.

It´s about time in danish jazz, those two were awarded both as extremely well educated, performing and recording jazz musicians. But much more because they also both of them are producers and not only for jazz. Niels Lan Doky, born 1963 (piano, keyboards) living in France with his family most of the time, when not on tour, and Chris Minh Doky, born 1969 (double bass) in Copenhagen and New York - fifty fifty.

They began making noices in the Copenhagen Jazz environment during the beginning of the 1990´s, and it did not take the danish and European jazz audience long time before, we all understood the importance of these two young brothers, they would replace or rather substitute the now late NHØP (double bass) and Alex Riel (drums), as the new GIANT danish vikings in jazz.

Perhaps because of their foreign vietnamese enheretence, they did not suffer from the typical danish downsizing-Jante-law, but looked at themselves like equals to any foreign jazz musician or as producers of jazz music from America or Germany.

Both NHØP and Alex Riel were´, and for Alex still is, almost shy, rarely speaking at all. Like each like instruments belonging to the redrawn rhytm group, they rarely shared any opinions of jazz or anything else for that matter.

But Niels and Chris did not behave like this typical danish Jante-law-thing saying: We´re not as good as anyone else, probably worse than anyone else.

So in a very few years in the 1990´s the Doky Brothers having first made a success each of them in the US in jazz with other well established American musicians like Gary Peacock, Jack DeJohnette, John Abercrombie, the Brecker Brothers, Daniel Humair, Peter Erskine etc.etc. they revolted against the typical danish underdog-part, which showed every other new talented danish jazz musician how to behave with the chin up, how to organize and how to produce music like they do it - over the pond.

This meant an increasement of invitations to all the new and older jazz musicians from the US, who were invited to Denmark - again - to perform and record on danish jazz labels like Storyville, Stunt and Steeple Chase and to give master classes to new musicians for instance during the Copenhagen Jazz festival like Pat Metheny (guitars) has done it some years back. The same year Marc Johnson (double bass) did it too.

So the Ben Webster Jazz Prize was given to the two Doky Brothers equally for their musicianship, as a pianist and a double bass player, but also because both of them gave and has given new inspiration to new younger danish talented musicians - to do it the Doky/danish way.

So I "had" to be there, to support using my palmes applauding them, but obviously also to listen to each of their own groups and the Doky Brothers as a duo. Alex Riel on the drums has recorded with both of them, and Niels Lan Doky´s Quartet for this awarding occation (look above to my first post) with the two french musicians had Alex drumming.

A memorable afternoon July 6 for danish jazz and these two highly talented awarded mentors in danish and international jazz, though I had to leave before the entire show was over to go for the Wayne Shorter concert at 8 PM.

So guys check in on each of their websites, borrow or buy some of their albums and you´ll find both of them Niels Lan Doky and Chris Minh Doky as good as any other professional pianist or double bass player from over the pond, where the success each of them have as jazz musicians are way beyond, what we in Denmark regard as a success in jazz.
