• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

Stop combinations

Gee Friends

I like very much bourdon 8' + flute 2'. In my country we call it "jeux creux" (hollow stops combination). i enjoy also bourdon 8' + flute4 ' + tierce 1-3/5 and in an other style gamba 8' + celeste 8'.
But in fact what I prefer is playing with two manuals. In this case, I like flutes 8'-4' for left hand and regale 8' for right hand (soloiste).
but in fact, I could fill ten pages of registrations, they are so much I like.

It seems that "bourdon" is a very popular stop. Since I don't have this stop on my organ, could somebody please tell me what stop or stop combination would be the equivalent of "bourdon"? Is it a reed?

Hello
I am very surprise that you have no bourdon. It is the softer stop of an organ. May be you have Gedackt that is very similar. If not, try with a flute.

I like it nice and mellow:
PEDAL
Subbas/Bourdon 16'
Gedekbas 8'
Couplers - Swell to pedal 8'

SWELL
Gamba 8'
Gedektfluit 4'

GREAT
Roerfluit 8'
and maybe Blokfluit 4'

To wake up the congregation before they start singing our organist likes:
PEDAL- Subbas 16'; Oktaafbas 8'; Gedekbas 8'; couplers Great & Swell 8' + Sell 4'
SWELL- Holpyp 8'; Gamba 8'; Prinsipaal 4'; Gedektfluit 4'; couplers Swell to Swell 16' & 4'
GREAT- Prestant 8'; Roefluit 8'; Oktaaf 4'; Blokfluit 4'; couplers Sw to Gr 16', Sw to Gr 8' & Sw to Gr 4'
and after the intro we add Super Oktaaf 2' and Mikstuur 3-4. During the singing we add 4 of the 5 remaining stops not used yet. If I dare to deviate from this during a service I get the evil eye from the organist, so I guess she likes it a lot.

Thanks !
That is more interesting that single manual registration.

About single manuals, do you know it is possible to split a manual with an ODF (virtual Organ Definition) to play 2 manuals works when you have only one ?

Never heard the term. One of our local churches however has a single manual organ, on part of the manual the colouring of the keys are reversed (sharps/flats are white, other keys are black). This section has it's own set of stops, if you use the same stop combination as for the rest of the organ then you have on long manual, if you use a different registration it's similar to two manuals (although very awkward playing with your left hand).

Would this be similar to what you are reffering?

Jonesy-once played an organ with only 16' bourdon myself and I used to draw it with a 4' flute and play up one octave...got the "hollow stop" effect that musicallis is talking about

I use that 16' & 4' combination a lot ... makes for a subtle, yet very clear solo stop against a Gemshorn celeste with the box closed. Having limited resources with the organ I play at church, I have to be very creative at times.

Thanks Jubelhorn - I'll give that a go.

I'm having lessons, and my teacher suggested a particular combination - I've never heard the organ sound like that ... it's really impressive when someone has the knowledge of picking stops like that.

I just tend to go for the 3 'fixed' options on the great manual - mind you, I'm trying different things out these days.

one of my faves is to play the melody on a Sesquialtera II (or nasard + tierce ) against a soft flute 8' + 4' accompaniment- almost new agey sounding!
