Well,I couldn't live without classical music! I am well educated and very knowledgeable and actually largely self-taught in the wonders of music. I lean toward the romantic and 20th century works. My favorite composer is Mahler. I have heard his symphonies live in concert at Detroit's Orchestra Hall. Detroit has a world-class orchestra,by the way. My other"hero" is Shostakovich.I love the orchestral and symphonic music the most. Hearing a great orchestra playing a great sumphony by a great composer really gets my blood boiling. To me,music is life in sound,it should mirror all the emotions imaginable in a humans brain. I can play entire symphonies in my mind,note-for-note. I think I am musically blessed, I wish to correspond with other people that share my enthusiasm with romantic an 20th century music. My dream is to conduct Mahler's 9th symphony in Vienna or London. I think I could instill in the players the motivation to make the event the ultimate performance! P,S, I think the greatest conductor of all time was Wilhelm Furtwangler.

 Hello zoned

Glad to have you become a member here at MIMF.
You've got some great aspirations listed there - and all can be achieved if one has the personal drive and commitment.

There are a few threads where Mahler has been mentioned but feel free to start a new discussion in the Classical forum.

Welcome to this forum!
How much education do you have, if not in music? Sounds like you know what you want. How did you teach yourself? I taught myself to read music.:smirk:

Born With An Ear For Music

To Jan and whoever else may be interested, I played the trumpet throughout grade school and High school. So I am educated in music. When I was 25 I took a music appreciation class in college. The experience transformed my life. I was fascinated by all the different composers.I read alot of books on classical music and I started to listen to recordings. At age 25 I converted totally to classical music! The college I went to had a box set of albums of Mahlers synmphonies conducted by Solti and played by the Chicago Symphony.I played those records over and over for months. I was hooked!I am now 50 years old. I have read many books on music...listened to many works and have owned about 1000 cd's. I can conduct. I taught myself! A few years back I read about Gilbert Kaplan conducting Mahler's ressurection sympony. He had no training at all. But he has money. I guess he is some kind of businessman. If he could do it-I can do it. I am educated, talented, but I am not rich! Ha!Ha! So, I dream of one day conducting a Mahler symphony-at least once, that is all I ask. "My time will come"-G.Mahler

Hehe, in a bookstore not far from your home town I stumbled upon a 'couch conductor set' consisting of a well illustrated 'instruction manual' and a genuine conductor's baton that was glued to the book. I was thinking of this set as I was reading your post.

Seriously, I wish you all the best in your pursuit of musical excellence. We definitely share a passion for great romantic (and late romantic in particular) symphonies. Personally, I am satisfied with conducting Mahler from my couch, even without the baton...

Nice to see you around

Ah! The Power!

My son is just starting piano lessons (age 4) and definitely has some talent. We were watching the Grieg piano concerto on YouTube, played by various folks, and I showed him the score. He was really impressed by the bits with LOTS of notes - the blacker the page the better - and after watching the very start of mov 1, he said "So, when the conductor goes like THIS" (Accompanying relevant arm movements) "the orchestra has to go BOOM! and play all this here, right?"
"Yes" I replied "Got it in one!"
"Wooooowwww!!!!!!":D
