In Russian Вечная Память means "Eternal Memory". It is part of the Pannykhida for the Dead = Memorial service for those who have reposed. It is a gift of the Russian Orthodox Church.

You would have had a great opportunity to be employed by our company in Brussels 15 years ago as a simultanious interpretator, with all these fluently spoken different languages :grin::grin:

This may be a stupid question. When you mention the 4000 thousand characters in the Chinese language, what excactly do you mean then? Is it words? Or letters? Or perhaps specific expressions?

Hi Intet,

Chinese characters are logograms: each symbol represents a semanteme or morpheme(a meaningful unit of language)as well as one syllable; the written language can thus be termed as morphemo-syllabic script.

In the Kangxi Zidian there are over 40,000 characters. In the Zhonghua Zihai there are over 80,000 characters. Fear not dear sir for even the most well educated Chinese rarely have a working knowlege of more than 15,000 characters. The trick is to memorise the 214 radicals and know the number of strokes in each character so that you can look it up in either of the above-mentioned Chinese dictionaries.

Since illiteracy has been such a great problem in China, Beijing has promulgated a system of "character simplification" whereby it would make it easier for the masses to learn Chinese. The flip side, I fear, is that many Chinese will then start losing out on being able to read the Classic texts in Chinese Literature. I had the option of studying the simplified system or the classic system. I chose the classic system so that I could have access to great canon of classical Chinese literature, such as works by Zhu Xi who was a famous educational philosopher. Here is some info about him:

Amasing and realy appreciated from my illiterate side of the desk. You realy overwhelmed me with this evolved explanation on the chinese characters with reference to the old classical chinese, you have preferred to study. I can understand why you chose this. So I guess my question was not all that stupid.

Keep it up dear sir , I love it (here should be a huge red heart for emoticon), when you can teach me concreet illimitable knowledge on the many things in life, I just don´t grasp.
