Unusual foods

I just watched a movie clip about this fruit, mangosteen. :)

Once you open the fruit, it looks weird (my first impression was - garlic), but those who tried it describe it as creamy and citrusy, a blend of peach and a pineapple. It is found in South East Asia and South America.

It may not be as novel to some of you who live closer to those areas, but I have never seen in it in here.

What are other unusual foods that you guys know of?:grin::D

I've had my first try at some allagator meat. The guy said it was to
taste like chicken. It didn't it had a fishy and porky taste to it if you
were to ask me. I didn't like it. Yuck!

That is one thing I can't get in this limited place. A durian fruit is
unheard of here. I know what to look for next time I go to kroger
store or walmart.

Oh yeah, I've seen the Durian fruit. I lived near this asian market, where they had fresh fish and a lot of fruits and veggies that are unheard of in America.

I never knew it was a fruit though! Looks like a heggehog ;) Now that Im well informed of its great taste qualities, I think im gonna give it a try ;)

Dear CT64,

It really only smells bad when it is over-ripe. The trace amounts of Hydrogen Sulfide present in its chemical make-up interacts with the ambient humidity and air temperature thus producing the sometimes noxious smell. But knowing the heavenly taste that you'll experience when tucking into a Durian far outweighs the pungent aromas which the fruit might exude.

Cheers,

I watered my ponsetta a while ago and now I found mushrooms growing
with it. I don't know what kind they are right now. They just popped
up within the last hour. What do you think they are?

Chemistry used to be my favourite subject in Russia (I had a really strict teacher, which really encouraged me to study), but then I moved here and kinda lost it. I wish I had pursued it though...along with the study of neurology, another one of my favorite subjects

Here's an interesting article in wikipedia about mushrooms. Some are edible and some are not. This may help to identify the ones that are growing in your yard. ;)

Judy - I'd STRONLY advise you NOT to eat those mushrooms!!!! (nor smoke them for that matter). You could end up deadybones (to use a quaint, Australianism).

Lols @ CT.

Speaking of hedgehogs, turns out that not only do they look like a delicacy (durian fruit), but they actually are. "Hedgehogs delight the palates of “British gypsies”"

Hi Muza

Yes British gypsies do eat hedgehogs, a company over here did do hedgehog flavoured crisps, but I don't think they sold very well.

CD. the Durian fruit looks and sounds lovely, I have never seen it.

Barfff ...

Well, Margaret, you have successfully ruined any appetite I had for the day ... :nut:.

It's quite true about the American processed fast foods ... When I was in Europe years ago, I lunched at McDonald's both in Rome and in Budapest ... even then, it tasted exactly the same as the American counterpart.

Hi Krummhorn

I am sorry to have ruined your appetite.

I am sure whatever you eat will taste and look much better.

One thing I will say McDonald's make some of the worst coffee I have ever tasted.
