Music Player for classical music

iTunes is a nightmare for organising classical music collections, can anyone recommend a music player software that is good for classical music?

I'd be interested, too. I've used MusicMatch and now Windows Media Player, and when I rip CDs to my hard drive I have to re-tag and rename every file.
I don't know, though, how any player could handle the amount of variables there are in classical music.

You are spot on with that assessment my friend - a nightmare indeed ... I end up using the labels differently as their names suggest. For example Artists I relegate to performers. Conductors I append to these. Most cluttering and silly.

I'm still using Windows Media Player, and finally successfully entered information in Properties so that in the WMP library shows the composer first as a header, for example "Anton Bruckner" under which I then have his symphonies by however many different conductors/orchestras, who appear after the titles/movements. But then Last.FM reads that info as the conductor/performer being primary, so it catalogs my listening charts as listening to Gunter Wand instead of Bruckner.

(if you're not familiar with Last.FM, the link under my posts gives my chart of current listening. Right at this moment it lists some of the Kindertotenlieder, which I would like to appear as Gustav Mahler, and does so in my WMP, but Last.FM catalogs it as Thomas Hampson)

No getting on top of this yet........

Winamp is available both as a freeware option and paid-for version, and will handle most file types and help you tackle batch editing of faulty tag information. It uses Gracenote for CDDB look-up (same as iTunes), so expect some degree of manual correction.

MediaMonkey is also available as a freeware and paid-for version, and will also handle most file types. It has, perhaps, slightly more powerful batch tag editing facilities, plus lots of additional stuff (some of which you only get when you cough up the cash) that might be of use to some. I believe it links out to FreeDB for its CDDB look-up - so you'll be looking at some manual correction of tags with this software, too.

For those wanting ultra customisation and who have a technical bent, the best media player by far is foobar2000. Be sure to visit its Wiki site for lots of add-ons (.dll files, many of them) which will enhance functionality and bring you hours of fun. The software handles just about anything you can throw at it, loads light and fast, and has powerful batch tagging abilities that allow you to stipulate what YOU want in your tag information. It's also worth downloading MP3tag to accompany foobar2000, as this smart program is the best free tagging software on the net.
