Hopefully this won't be viewed as too much of a carp... but Verne's artistic life-work belongs exclusively to the 19th centrury- not the 20th.I would include H.G. Wells, Jules Verne and J.G. Ballard among the finest of the 20th century science-fiction writers.

Missteps are understandable, though... what a challenging thread to narrow one's scope! I guess I'll try, though-
'Objectively' great:
Novelists- Joyce, T. Mann, Proust
Poets- Eliot, Rilke
Playwrights- G.B. Shaw, Pinter
(IMO) undervalued "favorites"
Novelists- Zamyatin, John Dos Passos, and (gasp, eek) Tom Wolfe:crazy:
Poets- Pound, Henri de Régnier
