Indeed, Teddy. That's one of his classics. Have you ever seen the movie? I thought it adhered very closely to the story and was very well executed.

Yes, saw it many years ago Steve. Good, but not quite as good as the book. Mind you that is true of most conversions from book to film. Its nice to use your imagination.

Yevgeny Yevtushenko - What a Poet!!!

I live only several hours away from Yevgeny, He lives in Tulsa now, I think. I take russian lessons in exchange for guitar lessons, from a pair of wonderful immigrants from moscow. Yevgeny's name is on my chalkboard as part of a recent lesson on culture

Hi thirdcreed. Your having such a famous neighbor and being able to inter-act with him the way that you do must be awesome indeed. Congratulations and I hope your Russian lessons are going well.

Thanks Whiteknight, I should make sure that it's not understood that I interact with yevtushenko in any way. I have lessons in my own music classroom, and the lady that teaches me had written his name on the board, so I would remember it.

Sorry, thirdcreed, I didn't mean to misunderstand you. :shake: Anyway, good luck with your ongoing Russian lessons; I know it's a very difficult language to learn. :banghead:

I would include H.G. Wells, Jules Verne and J.G. Ballard among the finest of the 20th century science-fiction writers.
Hopefully this won't be viewed as too much of a carp... but Verne's artistic life-work belongs exclusively to the 19th centrury- not the 20th.

Missteps are understandable, though... what a challenging thread to narrow one's scope! I guess I'll try, though-

'Objectively' great:
Novelists- Joyce, T. Mann, Proust
Poets- Eliot, Rilke
Playwrights- G.B. Shaw, Pinter

(IMO) undervalued "favorites"
Novelists- Zamyatin, John Dos Passos, and (gasp, eek) Tom Wolfe:crazy:
Poets- Pound, Henri de Régnier

No carp taken; when you're right, you're right.

George Orwell. From DOWN AND OUT to 1984 through all his other books he shows a masterly understanding of human nature. Am reading his diaries.

How about some of these cartoon writers? Some of these cartoons
became games later on like Pokemon, and some of the others as
well.

I'd hardly call cartoon writers great minds, but I could just be wrong.

Just about to read Anna Karenina, which is sometimes extolled as Tolstoy's finest novel (War and Peace is not a novel, by his own admission).

I agree. Much as I enjoy his work there are too many similarities to other fictional works. Who did not see Puck when Tom Bombadil appeared.

How about Richard Bach who wrote Jonathan Livingston Seagull?
That book was really popular during the early 70s.

My thread above was referring to Tolkien. Don't know what happened.

Richard Bach also wrote another book called Illusions which I believe was loosely based on his time as a barnstorming pilot. There is a underlying religious theme. You might enjoy it Judy

teddy

Meant to add the author claims to be desended from JS Bach!

In the realm of the genre of science-fiction writing, I do hereby add Philip K. Dick's name to that illustrious assemblage of great writers such as Wells and Sturgeon.
