Learning a second language

Learning a second language can be a challenge when all you know is
American english. But I'm learning. I hope I can say this here.
La musica me esta' pomiendo para dormir. Which means, music is
putting me to sleep. I thought I would say that since it is a music
forum. What do you think?

Hi Ms. Judy,

Just because you speak English does not make it any harder for you to learn a language. It really depends on your own study habits and if you are receiving help from a teacher and forcing yourself to converse only in the language you're trying to learn. A Chinese has an equally hard time learning English as an American has learning Chinese. I know that since I have spent time in China learning the language and speaking, reading, and writing only in that language during the time I was learning it.

I think learning another language can be fun. The do say the best way to learn, is to live in that country. It obviously worked for you CD.

You;re absolutely right in your statement - I counsel my friends and acquaintances to spend a semester in the country where the language is spoken.

Sweet Corn, that looks very interesting.

I still maintain the only way to properly learn a foreign language is to go live it. Difficult for most of us, especially when we have (unfortunately) grown up living in an English only household (like me).

My attempt at learning Danish was totally futile, of course, as most Danes speak English pretty well, certainly much better than my local Indian and Korean neighbours where I live.

There's a very successful little Mexican restaurant here called El Bracero
and I try what I've learned on them. Sometimes the waiter would smile
at me and walk off and then I sometimes get a response from him.

It certainly wouldnt hurt to know other language though, Corno. I think thats what Judy may have been getting at. For instance a lot of words in Russian have Latin roots, which helped me with English, and can be very helpful in Spanish, Italian, etc. IT is also easier to learn structure of sentences having something to compare it to.

So ofcourse you can still learn another language if you study hard, but you would have to study harder.

As for me, I would love to learn another language. I've always been good with languages, and back in Uzbekistan was learning German, Uzber, and was going to study French - that was our school program. They later instituted a program where you would start learning Latin since 1st grade, but that didnt involve my class (unfortunately ).

I was planning to invest in one of those Rosetta Stone language programs, but unfortunately my finances dont quite allow that at the moment. On my list are Spanish, French, and German

That's why I'd like to go to the USA, Canada or UK

I really would love to learn Spanish and Japanese. And English of course, too...

The worst thing is that in the place where I live, I don't get to use my spoken English too often...:/ I guess it'd be nice if I could check it sometimes
