• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

Rarely heard Dupre organ work

I notice that there's a broadcast of Dupre's symphony for organ and orchestra at some ridiculous time (to me) about 1:30am ... so those North Americans ... tune in and listen online www.abc.net.au/classic. You'll see it says "listen now" at the top of the web page in the link.

Here's what's on from after midnight ... sadly, I'll be in zzzzzzzland.

Indeed a fine work, as is his Concerto for organ and orchestra op.31.

I have recordings of both works with Ulrich Meldau at the organ of the Tonhalle in Zurich, with Daniel Schweizer conducting the Zurich Symphonic Orchestra; see items #3 and #7 on this list (the second of which is coupled with Jeanne Demessieux's beautiful Poème op.9, also for organ and orchestra).

Aloha acc,

Thanx for bring Demessieux's Poeme Op.9 to my attention - That will have to be my next Cd acquisition.

There is also another recording of Demessieux's Poème published by Guild, with Jeremy Filsell at the organ (BBC concert orchestra conducted by Barry Wordsworth, coupled with Dupré's Symphonie op.25, Cortège et Litanie op.19, and Joseph Gilles' (unique) organ symphony). A bit too fast for my taste, so I would go for the Schweizer/Meldau instead (unless you're also interested in the Gilles organ symphony and/or the version for organ and orchestra of Dupré's Cortège et Litanie).

On the other hand, it may also be worthwhile to wait for Stephen Tharp's recording of Demessieux's complete organ works, soon to be published by Aeolus, because this 3-CD-box will also include a historical 1952 recording of the Poème with Jeanne Demessieux herself at the organ.
