13 years imprisonment to a spanish ETA related terorist

Listening to this story from Spain during the TV evening news, reported by a danish journalist, but living full time in Spain made me shake my head - very frustrated.

The woman Erika at 41 years of age, a former operative within the Basque Liberation Movement, better known under it´s international terrorist name ETA, was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment one year ago for making bombs to explode anywhere in Spain, typically ouside the house of a Supreme Court judge or a well known powerful spanish politician´s house, who do not think the small part of Spain, the Basque province to the north bordering to France, should be liberated from the rest of Spain.

The fiance of Erika, one of the ETA leaders was convicted to life imprisonment on 4 murders, two of those murders the Spanish police couldn´t prove to the court, she actually was part of.

The Basque terrorist organisation ETA, has killed more than 850 people in Spain during the last 30 years, always in very violent actions, mostly using self built very powerfull bombs.

After 6 months imprisonment, she sends an application to the Supreme Court of Spain, to be permitted to leave the prison in the city of San Sebastian to go to a special clinic a couple of times per week, where the sperm of her fiance can be insiminated in to her, so she can become pregnant, as she wrote in the application to the Supreme Court: So I won´t be too old to have children, when released from prison in 13 years.

Here´s the "joke"?

The Spanish Supreme Court gave the permission for her, excactly as the words in her letter described, but it doesn´t stop here. The Supreme Court even decided for the country of Spain to pay the whole operation, transportation to and from the clinic, the doctor´s fee and everything else during her possible pregnancy inside the prison in an specially designed children friendly cell.

I wonder though if or why some of these highly educated judges never got the thought, this could be an attempt to excape prison, while first outside the prison, like a number of times in the past when ETA has freed long time convicted members of this terrorist organisation from local prisons???

I also wonder if this kind of treatment towards convicted female terrorists in Spain for the future, will alow for children to grow up inside a prison, because Mom has been convicted to long time imprisonment?

What about the natural ordinary needs of a child to have the chance at least for an ordinary upbringing among other children and supervising adults, with the basic needs any child need, like love, security, care and freedom outside the criminal invironment, inside the prison?

The world seems to grow in to a more and more weird place for us - none criminals - to live in.

I just couldn´t help thinking of the children of one Austrian, Herr Fritzl?

Hi Intet

I agree with you, it is weird. There is no way that the woman should be allowed out, to go to the clinic. When she comitted a crime she gave up her right to freedom, and having children. The country most definately should not have to pay for it. She could well use this as an excuse to escape, she should be watched very carefully.
