One of my favorite bands is Therion. They mix metalish tunes with orchestral tunes and choir. Very awesome are they indeed.
The albums i recommend is Vovin, Crowning of Atlantis, Deggial, Secret of the Runes, Sirus B and Lemuria. Many of their older albums are also great such as Theli for example.

Frederik,

Thank you for mentioning Therion. I've never heard of them before (A shortcoming of living in the US), so I went to Amazon to listen to clips from some of the albums you recommend. They are indeed fantastic! I may be placing an order for one or more album(s) very shortly.

For a long time I've been looking for a good symphonic metal band to listen to, but just haven't looked that hard for one. What's even better is that regardless of how old the stuff is, it's all new to me. There's just a wealth of (undiscovered in the US) tunes in EU.

I enjoy both metal, and classical music, a very unusual combination here in the US. I'm starting to learn that it's more common to enjoy both in EU.

Yeah Therion are great. Its a Swedish band actually, and they are very popular in Germany. Thats pretty much where most of this kind of metal is the most popular, heh. Im glad you enjoy the music. I really recommend you getting an album.
The first i ever heard from Therion was Vovin and thats pretty much what got me hooked on it.

I love symphonic metal! Nightwish, Sonata Arctica, Dark Moor, Rhapsody, Epica, etc. These bands might not be strictly symphonic, but they all have symphonic elements and plenty of strong melodies.

Another great one is Luca Turilli, I had known about him for a long time but just checked out his music recently. He is the guitarist of Rhapsody, but he has his own side project(Luca Turilli) which is really great symphonic power metal. The songwriting is very similar to Rhapsody, but the symphonic elements seem even more prominent. Really good stuff.

Jason, if you're really interested in metal bands with a strong classical influence(I know alot of good folk influenced ones aswell) I could recommend alot, I listen to alot of that stuff. I don't want to take this thread too far off-topic though. You can PM me if you're interested.

Please share here, I don't believe it would be off-topic one bit. We can all benefit from your knowledge.

I'm currently listening to some tracks from Luca Turilli's Prophet of the Last Eclipse on Amazon.com. My first impression is that it probably could have a little less vocals and a little more solo work, and I while I am enjoying it, I would probably enjoy it a little more if it was tuned down a bit. I like the slightly darker side of metal.

Regarding the vocals, now that I listen some more, there are some interesting tales/stories being told. They sound like tales of fantasy, which could be quite interesting if I could hear the full tracks. In this case, maybe instead of reducing the amount of vocal work, just increased song length with more guitar licks would be pleasing. But again, I'm just hearing snippets, so I could be completely off-base here.

I'm just now getting around to listening to some Nightwish (Album: Once), and my first impression is, "WOW!" That first track sounds amazing. I love the sound of track 1, 4, and 5 so far. I will most certainly be looking for one of these to purchase. What album would you guys recommend to get me started?

I realise this is 5 years down the line but Nightwish up until 2005 when Tara left are my current favourite. The live End of An Era dvd is hard to beat. I am going to have a go at that version of Phantom of the Opera in a school ensemble. I like working out the piano parts. They are very well written!

Therion - Vovin and Lemuria and Sirius B are great albums; although, their latest offering is a huge disappointment for me. Haggard, is also a great band. It's Chamber music mixed with heavy riffs, growls, and operatic vocals; they are more than a category of chamber music and are about 20 people.

I totally think Tarya is the best female singer in the galaxy! That's totally sad she left Nightwish, and now there is no opportunity to hit another concert with here fantastic voice....
