Hi all,

I'm about to "inherit" an "old" G4 Apple Macintosh computer (the specifications aren't known to me yet, but it's been used primarily for DTP work I presume) from my father in law, and I'm looking for Mac resources on the web - being a PC-only-guy up until now I haven't emerged myself in the world of the Apple Computer Co. yet. So any and all links is appreciated.

UPDATE:

I got the Mac today - seems to be a PowerMac3,5 - G4 with a 876Mhz processor, 756 mb ram (PC-133) and a 60gb harddrive - with a Philips CDD-5301 cd-combo-drive... With a 32mb nVidia gfx card and both usb and firewire - so it seems to be a reasonably good computer.
Unfortunately there's a problem with booting it - haven't found the cause yet though, but I have been able to boot up in safe mode - but since it's not completely similar to a Windows system I'm not sure what to do with it - yet... - getting it to boot up in safe mode took some research on the net... I'm planning to install Tiger and I'm planning on getting a DVD-burner - are there any limitations in what kind of DVD drive I can choose? I've been looking at NEC or Pioneer drives...

Any ideas anyone?

Congrats on the mac! Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4.) should run fine on it, though of course not as fast as the latest G5 Power Macs (or a Mac mini), but still perfectly usable and a good start in mac land

I'm not sure about the drive, though I believe most drives should work. Also, the startup problems are a bit puzzling. I would say that a "clean" re-install of the system (Tiger if possible) would probably be a good idea, especially since you've just got the mac and therefor don't have a lot of old prefs, docs and apps to worry about...

btw, I would recommend the Ars Technica: Macintoshian Achaia forum as a good place for mac related information and help. Most people there are quite knowledgable!

Good luck with the Power Mac

(And don't hesitate to ask me if you have any problems/questions - I'll help if I can)

It's going ok - I'm a little tied up at the moment - earning some money for a holiday trip with mu girlfriend - we're going to Ireland for a week in July - and it isn't free, unfortunately...

I've installed Tiger and it seems to be running smoothly so far - haven't, as I've said, had too much time (or mac-software for that matter) to test it out with yet... but I'm sure that'll come.
