I know it's a difficult (maybe even impossible) question because there are so many great ones, but I'm still making this poll just for fun, so let's se how it turns out

(heh... is it ProgRock, Prog Rock, or Progressive Rock? Probably should do a poll on that too

You know, people get upset with me when I say things like this:

But isn't it true that influence in music comes from commercial success and airplay?

Although I am the only one that voted for it, I would have to say Rush. I have 1 of their albums that I listen to at work quite a bit. Some of it could be considered "heavy rock", however none of it is "metal". Perfect combination if you ask me.

Also would anyone consider Dream Theater progressive rock?

Genesis where great, but after Peter Gabriel left, they just wheren't the same. After that, if you really wanted to hear Genesis as you had before, you had listen to Marillion, probably the best Genesis tribute band ever...

Based purely on personal taste, I went with Rush. Pink Floyd however, was probably the most influential Prog Rock band.

I would have to disagree with Jason. Although Pink Floyd was a very influential Progressive Rock Band, I do not think it was the most influential. I would still have to go with Rush, although I must admit that my opinion is slightly biased due to the fact that I dislike Pink Floyd, however Rush was one of my favorite bands growing up. And please don't ask why I dislike Pink Floyd, it is a very long story, and inappropriate for me to explain at work.

I can't really decide between Pink Floyd, Rush, and Yes, but they all rock. That much I know.

I'll say Marillion for a change but I mean Marillion with Fish - especially my favourite album - Fugazi. To me, it's one of the best prog rock productions and I generally have weakness for Fish.
I also totally agree with mentioning Dream Theater - one of my favourite bands, as well.

I think that Dream Theater is The Greatest Prog Rock band ever.

Greetzzz,

MNeMoNiC (voted other at the poll).

I think that Dream Theater is progressive symphonic rock/metal. Its heavier then Rush and its also more modern... That's my opinion. And I think it’s the greatest prog rock/metal band ever.

Jethro Tull had set an important base for the next generation of prog metallers and rockers. I believe that Psychotic Waltz have a magical effect on me as a progressive band. then come Jethro Tull. And Fates Warning are excellent musicians as well.

Just my 5 cents, but personally I hate this kind of threads - they give 0 information and the sheer notion of comparing bands (or Art in general) geeves me the creeps and alludes to a pissing contest.

They are all great!

- they give 0 information

However, they do give an impression of which prog rock bands/artists the members of this forum prefers and incites a discussion of prog rock in general, which was the purpose of this thread.

and the sheer notion of comparing bands (or Art in general) geeves me the creeps and alludes to a pissing contest.

Which is exactly why I started out by saying this is "just for fun". I haven't seen any sign of pissing contest in this thread. The only sign of "conflict" actually being your post

(though your opinion on the matter is of course very much welcome!)

They are all great!

I fully agree!

Frederik,

Where do you see conflict in my post
frown.gif
? Just expressing an opinion.

However I do feel very strongly about this - Art is not a matter of competition and there is truly NO WAY to compare artists. Comparison requires a set of universally accepted standards / measures by which it can be performed. Popularity is BY FAR not one of them?

Of course it is obvious anything I say is a priori IMHO

And I do respect your opinion, Adam. Please note that my use of the word "conflict" was meant in jest, not to be taken literally (hence the use of citation sign and the smiley

I agree with your comment regarding popularity not being a good measure. And I'll give you that it would proably have been better to name the subject of this thread: "What are your favourite prog-rock bands?" instead of "What is the greatest?". The first would have been much more correct in regard to the actual topic.

But it wasn't named so. When I started this thread initially this part of the forum was pretty new, so I wanted to spark some attention and thus used a little hyperbole in the subject line. It's too late to change it now though.

In any case it's an interesting discussion you raise. How to compare (or not compare) artists and music. I think it deserves a topic on its own.

Re: What Is The \"Greatest\" Prog Rock band?

And so it does indeed - a subject many intellectuals and even some of mankind's greatest philosophers tackeld with ...

To think of that ALL of them did - from Aristotle to Heidigger.

Re: What Is The \"Greatest\" Prog Rock band?

For me, Pink Floyd, it was a very tough decision as alot of the other bands listed are true monsters, especially King Crimson and Yes.

The one band that is definately dwarfed by the rest is Marillion, they just don't even compete for me, their music isn't in the same league to be honest.
