• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

hello
I have been asked on You tube to compose a baroque funeral march.
Not obvious. I wrote today this piece. Can you tell me if you like this music or if I should change something before I release the piece. Thanks.

Baroque funeral march

time signature is 3/8
tempo is 132 quavers/mn
duration is near by 2:50
organ is virtual organ of the anglicane church St-Joseph in PARIS

Hello J-P,

It's very nice but don't you think it is a little bit too fast as for funeral march? Just a kind suggestion.

Cheers,
Mat

According to Mat suggestions (in this forum and by private message) I have made a new version.

Tempo is much slower. Duration is now 4:17 with the same number of bars.
20 bars of "C" pedal have been edited with a new bass line
Some change in harmony (twice two bars of Dm7b5 chord before a G7).
The remaining is not changed

Hi J.-P.,
I've listened to both versions and am very impressed. The second is in much more sombre mood, but I prefer the first - NOT as a funeral march but as an organ prelude in 17th/18th century style. With respect, neither version to my senses is evocative of a march.
Best wishes.

Thanks
I agree with you; Making a March in baroque style is not obvious, but the organist from Germany who commanded this music is very happy.

Congratulations, J.-P.
Sounds as though you have amply satisfied a commission. That's got to be a success!
Best wishes for its continuation.

Hi J-Paul,

Of both tempo versions, I lean towards the faster as my preferred choice ... Interesting though that the piece takes on a completely different "mood feel" for each tempo variation, at least to my ears.

Am I in a Cathedral listening to Bach

I am afraid I hear this as more a prelude or recessional then a funeral marche as such. A much slower tempo might lend it more for a funeral:however I would use it as is for the ressional at a funeral and not a prelude to as I hear this more as a joyfull sound into heaven if you will.
Very well done and enjoyable...keep up the good work ...we need good compositions. Bill

i did not known the word "recessional". it is a good idea, I'll change the title.
