I voted for 7 thinking I would be entirely alone, I remember riding home from school, with a dover study score in front of me, listening to the first movement over and over again.

A few years past I heard the 5th at a concert by a new young conductor and it sounded so different to what is normal to hear, almost a new symphony.

We have a joke in Spanisk...Dad = Papá in Spanish. For = Para in Spanish

Then to whom did Beethoven write his 5th symphony? Well...for his DAD!!!

Yeah....Para Papá! Para Papá!.

That is a coincidence because I experienced the same sym with the NZSO with Pietari Inkinen coducting and Vesa-matti Leppanen leading they brought out instrument voices that were normally subdued or at least not easy to pick out, poetic licence perhaps ;)

Colin - it is very difficult I think for an orchestra to bring off a new perspective to such a well known work as Beethoven's 5th. The NZSO is a fine ensemble, for sure.

David,
Inkinen comes from a rock background whether this influenced the work or not is hard for me to know as rock is a closed book to me, but the variations in tempi coupled with the emphasis on various sections/instruments made it sound so fresh, at the pre concert talk we were told to expect something different and it sure was.

There's not much of a spread between the first 4 - all are simply wonderful.

The 2nd movement of the 7th basically clinched that one for me, closely followed by the 5th and 2nd.
