Darius Milhaud: Qu'en pensez-vous?

[Qu'en pensez-vous] What do you think of him?

An interesting guy who couldn't care less about "great," magnificent works. He composed and composed as though he were writing his diary in music. I guess his goal was to say, "I'm here, listen to me if you like."

At the core of his opus one finds this: sincerity. And it's interesting that this free writing composer connects with his listeners as a normal, not unusual or exceptional, artist. That was his goal: to be normal.

When listening to Milhaud one finds oneself, not some fantasy à la Wagner, some super performer, à la Liszt, some Alpine super-being, à la R. Strauss, or some system creator, à la Schoenberg.

Getting to know Milhaud is getting to know why we're human beings.:p

Moi, je l'aime bien. :)

How could a person not like a composer who comes up with Le Boeuf sur le Toit.

Not to change the topic, but from Les Six, I also enjoy Poulenc as well. I hear many elements in common in both composers' works; particularly a certain natural, sunshiney-ness. (Yes, I just made up a word.) I don't know if the two composers felt they had any similarity in style, but they were friends, I believe...
