• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

Playing my College's organ for the first time

Wow, I've been working for a Girls' College since April 20 and the College chapel has a rather wonderful two manual pipe organ. So, I played it for the first time yesterday to one of my colleagues who really didn't believe him when I told him I could play. It was originally in a congregational church in Petersham (inner western suburb of Sydney) before being sold to the College. I will take some photos of the Chapel (with its lovely stained glass windows) and the organ and post here. It's got a wonderful range of stops for such a modest little beastie.

Photos attached.

These are actually quite nice photos. Must have been a real treat for you to try out this instrument. Can we count on some sound samples, or would it be too much to ask?

the photos of the stops aren't very clear I'm afraid - not sure how to solve that without breaking the stop list into two ore more sections ... I'll ponder that, however. It's got a wonderful (and quite noisy) trumpet on the Swell and a beautiful Oboe on the Great. That's it for reeds - however - coupling the trumpet down to the Great works wonders. The pedal division, whilst small (two 16 foot stops and two 8 foot stops) is amazing. Two of each of the sizes are soft and the other two quite powerful. In fact the louder of the 16 foot pedal stops is particularly reverberant and effective - not sure how to record that but I'll try and figure something out. I don't have the proper equipment.

Sounds like quite a gem. That's the wonderful thing about being an organist - every instrument has its own "personality".
