• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

Since I didn't succeed to get far with the author of jOrgan, could I enlist the help of the more technically abled in this forum as to what can be done to jOrgan v3.7 to embed the following changes permanently into the software:

(a) default setting to have "no touch sensitivity"
(b) to get the program to register MIDI channels as numbered from 1-16 (not 0-15).

The intention is not to alter the program other than to make it that little bit easier to use. The advice will surely help technical idiots like me.

Hi Mark,

I've moved this discussion regarding jOrgan to this forum area dedicated to such topics.
I think it will receive better responses here.

Hi Mark,
While I have compiled jOrgan from the sourcecode, I have not delved into the code deep enough to know where these defaults are (yet).

Point (a) will only affect newly created ranks, so one would need to find that code section and make the changes there.

Point (b) has multiple places within the code that would need to be changed.

By the way, jOrgan is really easy compile in Linux. I assume you're using Windows though? Would you be interested in learning about how to compile it?

Graham, Thanks for your kind interest. I have just been to a computer store to check out the cost of a dedicated motherboard, dual core, 3GB RAM, 160GB HDD, Creative Audigy Sound card (over and above the one on the motherboard). I am fairly happy with price quoted but I want to check another store before commiting myself and risk a whack on the head with a frying pan from my wife for spending money on more computer stuff!

I am interested in Linux but despite various discussions in the other forum, the steps I need to follow are rather vague. I do have a spare HDD that is partitioned into 2 x 100GB+ partitions. So I can actually take on your offer. I was planning to wait for Bill Skees to complete his manual to follow instructions that may appear there. So please feel free to guide me along.

One minor point, I had attempted to intall Ubuntus on my laptop. It took a substantual chunk of disk space on the 80GB HDD and had to uninstall because I was desperate for memory. However, everytime I reboot the choice to load ubuntus remains. How do I remove that on start-up?

Hi Mark B,

Edit your boot.ini file and delete the entry for Ubuntus. You can edit this file with a text editor such as notepad. Should take care of the start up choice.

Hi Stephen, I made a search for this file and only came up with a boot.ini.backup! This is in c:/windows/pss . Deleting the ubuntus entry there did not change anything.

Hi Mark,
You probably need to change your Folder View settings so that you can see system files... what OS are you using? WinXP, Vista or Win7?

Win XP sp3. I searched on the file manager xplorer2. View system and hidden files option is activated.

Hi Mark,
In Windows Explorer, click on 'Tools > Folder Options', then click on the 'View' tab and scroll down to the 'Hide protected operating system files' and deselect the check box... You should then be able it find the file in c:\

You can get at boot.ini in Win XP by using Start|Run and typing msconfig
When you run it, it will show a dialog with several tabs, one of which will be boot.ini.

Thanks Pete and Graham.... and Stephen! I managed to find the file and edited it. Rebooting now without that annoying option. Thanks again pals!

Whenever you are ready Graham, you can start the Linux installation lessons which I will slowly and carefully follow and carry out on the spare partitioned HDD that I have.

As of jOrgan 3.8beta3
(a) is still set to the default "get velocity"
(b) starts midi channel numbering from 1 instead of 0

All the best.

Thanks Erik. Indeed, despite the embarrassment I was needlessly subjected to having been axed from that forum, the two issues are being taken up by SM after all:

beta 3 is available for download:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/jorgan/files/

- new Ranks now use 'reset all controllers' as first Engaged message
(old Ranks were already converted in previous betas),
- Customizer uses 1-16 channel "user" naming
- Creative and Soundfont imports have an additional option for touch
sensitivity (not selected by default
),
- on eject both Recorder and Memory view will now use the disposition's
folder to choose a file from.
- full screen action is now located in the 'file' menu
- you can now extract memory definitions from old dispositions...

Another question for the experts...

I have a number of organs as sf2 files. There is no xyz.disposition or xyz.organ files to be able to load them using jOrgan or GrandOrgue. There are also no associated skins. How can I play them?

In another instance I have an organ with files bearing an extension "ea2". How can this VPO be played?

Mark,
If you have a sound card with a hardware synthesizer (such as most Soundblasters or other Creative sound cards), you can load an sf2 file into an empty bank, and you will be able to play it, but only one stop (called a Preset) at a time. Or you can use a softsynth such as sfz, and you will need to load the sf2 file into that. Again, you will be able to play only one Preset at a time.
If you have a Creative sound card installed, then you should download the free soundfont editor, Vienna, and you will be able to play one Preset at a time. If you don't have a Creative soundcard installed, you may like to try the free Viena soundfont editor. (In my case I use Viena a lot for general soundfont production, but for some reason it doesn't "audition" the loaded soundfonts cleanly for me, so to listen to them I depend on sfz, which for me is no hardship).

I have this sfz-sf2 player installed which I use to play piano or hapsichord soundfonts.... as you say "a stop/preset at a time". But this is hardly how an organ should be played. Would it be possible to create a disposition or organ file that can be loaded (with jOrgan or GrandOrgue respectively) giving one the opportunity to play multiple stops at a time?

Hi Mark,
Using the 'Import' Soundfont exptension of jOrgan you can automatically create Stops and Ranks based on the SF2 file. You would then need to create the necessary Keyboard and Fluidsynth elements and associate the Console to a skin of your choice (classic.zip for example).
Are these public domain soundfonts or ones that you have created yourself?

Hi Graham G, Always nice to hear from you! What you proposed never occurred to me. That's how conversant I am with jOrgan. What is it exactly I'd have to do after importing the sf2 font?

The fonts I have must have been free/ public domain. No way I could create these myself... well not as yet, anyway. I have: Allman Symph IV, Jeux 14, JJ's English Chamber Organ, Orgue, Spekko Gothic.

I have Stefan's Cathedral Pipe Organ but the files have extension *.ea2!
