• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

Hi Mike,
I haven't looked at the code that controls that, so can't say whether or not it'll be a workable feature request. Off the top of my head I'm wondering if the General Pistons are controllable via NoteOn/Off on the Stops channel... I'll have to check that out tomorrow...

Todays offering

Just finished this one, John Stanley, Voluntary No 3 of Opus 5. starts off almost subdued, then comes alive. Basically hardly touched note wise just added the stop control staffs, made a couple of minor errors there, you may notice the ped to GO coupler operate a few times, need to sort that, but not at 00.45am! bed calls!!

Tried the St Augustines set yesterday, not overimpressed, definitely prfer the Stiehr Mockers. What others are around on the free/cheap side, if any, I did try Google, nowt cheap so far. I did try the "happy birthday" one last year when I was using My Organ

I've started to save the stop and coupler control staves separately when I find a combination I really like, then I can just copy/paste it in, should save quite a bit of time.

Nearly finished the tutorial I'm doing on stop control from a score, may be able to post it tomorrow, it includes a bit of an Excel sheet & some screen shots embedded in a word .doc.

Graham, will the Enigma sets play on GrandOrgue, think they are aimed at Hauptwerk, but not sure which version, downloading it now, looks like I'll be up for another half lour or more at the rate it's coming!

Hi Mike,
The Enigma is created for Hauptwerk and only comes in Hauptwerk format. You would need to check the license that it is released under before creating an .organ file for it.

Had an idea earlier (may have just been a brain fart though) while trying to decide when to get out of bed. Quite simple, so it may already be in use.

Not being a player, I wondered if another possible use for playing a score through GrandOrgue, could be employed when learning a piece, do you start by learning say the right hand part first, then the left, then put the 2 together and start on the pedals?

If so would it be useful at some stage to have GrandOrgue play the other staves to "accompany" your practice

Open the score "name" in Finalé, Noteworthy or whichever application you use, delete a staff completely and "save as" "namea", reopen original, delete another staff repeat "save as" "nameb", repeat for as many staves as you need.

"name" = the name of the score file, a,b, etc = identifier for deleted staff, could be s=swell, g = great, p = pedals or r= right hand, l= left hand .

Does this make sense? Is it likely to be of use? Don't tell me, you've been doing it for ages!

Tripped myself up a bit today, working on a piece in G minor having been working in A minor and C major; wondered why one of the stops was not operating, DUH G minor has 2 flats, so rather than change all the stop control "chords", I changed the note number in GrandOrgue down one.

And that after having to copy a whole 110 bar/measure stave by hand, cos I couldn't copy/paste from a C clef to a bass clef.

Hi Mike, sounds like you're having fun at least :) And learning a lot along the way. It is great to be able to experiment and change things and finally get something working well!

Have fun!

Thanks Alex, I've bookmarked that.

Latest "work", (I know it's been done a few times before), I like Purcell's Dido's Lament, so I transposed a version scored for voice, 2 violins, viola and bass. Fun and games as mentioned yesterday, the viola part was written on Alto clef.

Anyway got it sorted, but not too happy with the registration, I'm still using Stierh Mockers extended with a small change, like a Trumpet en Chamade replacing the Tierce in the Positiv.

Registration used

Ped - Soubasse 16', Prestant 4'

Great - Montre 8', Flute 4'

Positive - Hautbois, Trompette en Chamade

I've also tried it with the 4' octave coupler on the great and 16' sub octave on the positiv any opinions on which works best for this work? (the file name with octv is the one with couplers used.)

Just in case anybody has Finale and wants to experiment I have included the .MUS file, (had to zip this as MIMF won't accept .MUS files) and a text file of the organ stop set up for the SMext set, also a PDF of the score, the .MUS file when inzipped should run in any of the Finalé applications, Reader will only display it or play it through the PCs built in synth, notepad or one of the full packages will display, and play through GO (or other VPO if the stops can be set up to follow the score) also edit.

Discovered an easier way to input the stop control "notes", kick self time! I can input chords or single notes from the Midi keyboard to Finalé DUH ! Serious attack of thumb in bum and mind in neutral syndrome, now cured!!

Should cut the time for that exercise from minutes per page to seconds! Phew!!!!!!!

Thank you, Thank you Graham! I now uderstand how to use Jack. I 'll start now istalling it and I hope it works. I tried for a couple of months now to get some of my numerous iplulse responses into GrandeOrgue. It is a missing point of the project. Of course I added my hardwere digital reverb to my pc audio output, but now I think we can go beyond cable spagetti ect.
Question 1. Is it possible that GrandOrgue itself can host impulse responses and do the convolution and then the dry/wet mix ?
Question 2. Is it posible that GrandeOrgue can exist as a VST instrument (extension .dll) for use it with Reaper/EnergyXT/Seib's VstHost ect?

Greetings
Panos

Sorry Graham I forgot. I also dowloaded the new version of GrandOrgue and I'll test it right now! I 'll post my results later, here.

Hi Panos,
At the moment GrandOrgue is not able to host a VST effect or be a VST instrument. It is possible that at some time in the future these things will be added.

Warm Greetings to All !:)

Ok Graham I understand. You do a wonderfull work out there, spending a lotta precius time. Nevertheless I'll be waiting for these things to hapen.

Yesterday I spent about 10 hours testing:crazy: the stuff you proposed for, so this is the report of my test:

Equipment :
a. Laptop PC Acer 5738ZG/windows7/Intel T4400fast dual core2,2Ghz/4GB mem/2,3GBHypermem/Asio$all v2
b. Yamaha EL900 dig organ(internal merging of 3midi channels for upper/lower/pedal brd +2 more for 2 more manuals) with RomioII USB/Midi interface(works perfect)
c. Yamaha MOTIF ES-6 synthesizer/sampler(direct Usb connection)
d. Korg SG-1D sampling grand piano(as mother also with RomioII)
e. KRK systems Rockit 6GL special edition active monitors
f. Sennheiser headphones E H2270.

Music pieces I played on :
Bux159, BWV565, 561, Bux219,217,220, BWV645,570, adagioBWV564,596(I love this concerto),Pachelbel's Toccatas in Em,Gm,Gm, Ciacona in Fm, Alein zu dir Her Jesu Christ, Praeludium in Am, Frescobaldi's Capriccio Pastorale and of course(as allways) my own improvisations:smirk:

TEST no1. New GrandOrgue(v.2).
Works exelent ! Better than v.1. I Throw to it everything I've got, no problems at all. Sample sets I used : Jeux d' orgues2 older relese, Happy Birthday Organ(Prospectum), Orgue de Salon(Sonimusicae), New Jeux d'Orgues(two versions), St.Agustine's (new) two versions, Sygsoft-Bezemer Harpsichord, Blanchet1720,Petit Italien,Italian Spinet,Taskin egal(2maual) clavecins.
In a big full coupler blast(from Stiehr-Mockers new version) the output went full red (defaul setting of 50%) with distortion, so I had to reduce it to 18% !
I liked the new look, it's more informative, but I missed the little red dot for the rec option(old habbits).
Inside the voice(polyphony) panel I saw the number 2048(!) is it possible?
Then I performed the arms 'n elbows test with all the stops on(St.Augustine). No problem. I know I've got very good ears, so I heard Full 49 keys polyphony, each key playing at least 10 voices. So is GrandOrgue tells the truth? I did that test months ago with St.Augustine's on Hauptwerk free edition and I only could play a four voice chord!
So Thanks for v.2 It's now my favorite organ player(with Jack!-see below).

Test 2. St.Augistines sample set.
Better than Hauptwerks edition.I say that cause this organ has not got half stops(2 2/3, 1 3/5 and so) and one have to use the closed horn to come to similar results. This stop on this new version blends better with the final mix, cosidering that's also missing a mixture stop.
I'v got problem with the tremullant. A nice addition but it runs too fast more like a Farfisa vibrato than a real tremolo.so it can't be used with the beautiful Orchestral Oboe in Swell.O.k. you can't have it all.

Test 3.New Jeux d'Orgues
EXELLENT! Far beyond away...
I liked so much the Hauptwerk III version with the real console photo and the Gothic letters on stops.

Test 4. Adding reverb to GrandOrgue (Jack...!)
I followed Grahams istructions to the spot with the exeption of Freeverb3(I just can't make it appear) and instead I used the Reverberate LE(very good).
During the decompression(Jack) process there was a warning from Winrar that Panda(?) is missing or can not be found, but anyway it was decompressed o.k. Jack istalled itself fast and full. There was a problem thow when I tried to find portaudio and control. I found only the .dll ones and nothing worked with Jack.
I was familliar with Hermann's Vsthost, so I had allready a stand alone reverb(reverberateLE) in my desktop and the short cut from GrandOrgue's istallation.
After an hour or so trying to find a solution with Jack(I just couldn't get the connection kit window on my desktop) I performed a reistallation of Jack(using .exe) and then came the responce from the wizard : "do you want a repear?" Oh! yes I said and off we go all things that Graham said happened.Exactly. Now we can all have the delight of convolution reverb on our virtual pipe organs. I played a Frescobaldi harpsichord toccata inside Milano's Scala!!(Open impulse responce library)

One last thing. Jack worked with all my other stand alone instruments(Safwan Matni's General grand piano, Hammond c-3, Mellotron 400, miniMoog,Arp26oo an so on) exept my two Midigers(150/216) cause they don't use Asio and of course Hauptwek:(. It only works with rerouting its output(x64) to REAPER. I 've got the Reaper I'll give it a deep test and I'll post you here the resaults.

Thank you all for reading this, and thank you again Graham
Enjoy GrandOrgueV.2!

Hi Panos,
Thanks for the report back. It is great to know that it all works on someone else's system too ;)

Polyphony in GrandOrgue is currently max = 4096. Now with the multiple instance version you can have up to 8 instances of GrandOrgue running (all connected to Jack) giving you a grand total of 8 x 4096 = 32768 notes!

What operating system are you testing on? Jack is only available in a 32-bit Windows version (please post to [email protected] and add your request for a 64-bit JackRouter build... ) so the Hauptwerk 32-bit version will work with Jack, but not the 64-bit version.

Have fun!

Hi again Graham!
My system is dual, I mean I've got 64bit windows7 but also can run with 32bit, for example there are two internet explorers one each. Also there are two program files in C., one x86 and the other for 64 bit programms ect. My version of free Hauptwerk is istalled in 64 bit programms(there is also the VST version wich unfortunatly runs in demo mode with the bell on...), but the organ definition files ect are installed on their own in C.
Must I ask them for a 64bit Jack?
Thanks for the advice
Panos
