View Full Version : Learning Harp

OK, so on Monday I bought myself a 29 string folk table harp which is a lovely instrument. Only problem is I can't really play it. I can pick out a tune along with a few chords very slowly, but that's about all and I have no idea whether I'm doing it right.
Does anyone know if there's anywhere on the internet I could find some direction, since I can't fork out for lessons and probably won't be able to get to a music shop for a bit.

Well, it takes time to learn how to play an instrument! And it demands alot of technical skill to play the harp I can assure you... I don't think there is any easy way to go about it, so I would recommend you to borrow some books at the library or take classes.....

While probably not being a Celtic Harp, you might find some of the information on this page useful:

Have fun!

What does harp music look like, I heard it looked quite different to standard staves of the piano??

Would it be not advantageous for a harp to have one string for each note on the chromatic scale so that one doesn't have to fool around with those hook-down pedals? I admit that I am out of my league when it comes to harps https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead3.gif https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shake.gif

I do admire their widely varied repertoire and laud people who take the time to learn what seems to be a difficult instrument to master.

Yes it probably would be good to have strings going up chromatically and I believe you can get harps that have 3 sets of strings - two sets on either side as normal, one for each hand, and a set of sharps/flats in the middle. Apparently they're really hard to play though.
I have found a lady who is a self taught harpist and will give me a few pointer lessons for free and lend me some books which is good. Thankyou for your help though!!!
