New Age Pianist Dan Chadburn Studied Classical And Avant-Garde

There is a new CD called NOCTURNES by Dan Chadburn, a classically-trained pianist who composes his own material, and although he performs a couple of solo piano pieces, the majority of the recording also features top musicians from the Washington, DC, area on violin, viola, English horn and French horn. Chadburn also plays synthesized harpsichord and bass on one tune and adds soft synth strings to several of the tracks.

Dan received his Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance at Pacific Lutheran University, attended the Film Scoring Program at UCLA, did scoring for film and television, worked as a session musician, moved to England and studied under avant-garde pioneers Denis Smalley and Simon Emmerson, and earned a Masters of Music degree in ElectroAcoustic Composition from London City University.

Chadburn is obviously talented as evidenced by this CD (his fourth album) which avoids the label of being just another solo piano recording in the marketplace by adding those other instruments a little here and some more there throughout the album. The arrangements between the piano and the two stringed instruments and the English horn (all three of them only on about three tunes) are quite complex with one instrument darting to the forefront while another submerges into the rhythm for a few seconds, although there are occasions of cross-melodies and doubled parts. All in all it is quite interesting and maintains the listener’s interest. Give this one a four out of five stars.
