It's time for an mp3 download...

The piece, "Intermezzo for Brass Quintet" is very small - only takes about a minute to play, yet I hold it rather highly myself https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif It can also be found as track No. 3 on the CD Light On Your Path (http://www.magle.dk/english/cd-info/light-on-the-path/main.html)
It's performed by the Brass Ensemble of the Danish Royal Guards (http://www.damu.dk/dk.asp?link=DKLM&dokID=59&sprogID=2&linkID=59&kild eID=), who recorded it in 2000. I'm going to upload the score (pdf) later. [edit: done]

Download Intermezzo for Brass Quintet (http://www.magle.dk/audio/frederik_magle-intermezzo.mp3) (1.6 MB, 192kbps mp3)

Click here to download the score (http://www.magle.dk/scores/frederik-magle-intermezzo-brass-quintet-score) (90 KB pdf) (contact me (http://www.magle.dk/contact.html)for the parts)

hmm... - that's a peculiar little piece... - some baroque-scholar would probably be thrilled with this continual "fortspinnung". it's "cute"... but a little "uneasy" i someway do to this contiual no-cadenza type of "intermezzo"...
as to the hornplaying pleasing... well... - I think it's more fun for the trumpets as compared to the lowbrass "hoot hoooot" - but with that said... any addition to the repetoire for the brassquintet is very much appreciated https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
the general style and ending somehow resembles Peter Schickele - in his pdq bach compositions... https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm glad you like it, Pamadu https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Corno....hmmm... well, I don't agree with your perception of it being "uneasy". It is very short, and thus you may not have time to get "adjusted", however, that's actually the point: It's like you get just a glimpse of the music, then it's gone...

anyhow, I've uploaded score

https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Can't get PDF Down.??????? Keeps giving me a Message the same as "Hitsware's" Midis...then crashes Puter. https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bawling.gif https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

EDIT.!!!!!!!!!! Have been to Active X Controls Centre at Microsoft (that's what little box tells me to go when I press download attachment) and still cannot get it down.....Don't know why.?????????

EDIT.!!!!! Can hear at 0.35 a little thingo there of dissonance....but can't get trumpet at end (bar 9)....but can't the score https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bawling.gif

well... it's not that it's "uneasy" as such... might be a bad word in this context... - it IS a intermezzo and as such I think it fits nicely in that it not "dwells" and that it "keeps going"... - but somehow that's the same things that makes it a little, hmm... what's the word... "jiggly" https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif heh... hmm... not really fitting either... - maybe a Danish expression like "så hold da i det mindste en lille (harmonisk) pause, for dælen da..." hehe https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif - https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif - I like it, it's not bad at all, and the style is also quite good, albeit "rustic" https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif - there's one chord around 0.35 (where the horn has a little audible "movement" that dissonates a little, some seconds clashing, just to "abrupt" the "flow" a little - just before it "recaps" the beginning with the other trumpet taking some fanfare-like position and continues to accompany the group towards the end... https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

EDIT... well somehow it always helps me to get a look at the music - and this time it made it a little more clear that the fact I might find it "uneasy" was the two bars you keep repeating over and over and over https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif - as to Pauls comment on the "error free playing" I think there's a small stumble from one of the trumpets in the end of bar 9... - yeah... I'm a "clam"-buff https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif - it's an environmental-illness https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

EDIT 2: well, it grows on you... that's for sure... https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif - I've been playing with bars 9-12 just to add that little extra "corno-overkill-fooling-around-with-other-people's-music" https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif (all in good fun off cause, no "harm" intended neither composer nor work https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif) - if allowed I can post my "fooling-around" here later (else I'll probably just hit the delete button tomorrow when I wake up and see "the mess" I've made https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif) - I'm heading off to bed now - going to Sweden tomorrow for a little prolonged "out-back-Sweden" weekend... just to say hi to the mooses. heh... https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
So have a nice moose-free weekend all of you https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Hi Frederik. i have tried as well as pamadu and all we can get when we hit the 'attachment' download button for the pdf is a notice asking us YES or NO to go to this site.

Hep Frederik.
Rigtig godt stykke. "light music".

Verdensklasse Frederik!!!! https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers444.gif

Hi Frederik,
first of all I'm new to this eminent forum. I like your piece very much, as it embraces the noble qualities of the brass. The first and dominant phrase has a quick and... open-minded taste of motif, an elegant fortspinning and a cool ending comment(imitation). It then lingers on increasing in tension, mainly due to the rising trumpets. It is indeed very, very pleasant to listen to. I do think though, that you trick us a little by letting the tuba end with this lonely ess in the last bar, as a comical artefact. I'd prefer it to end with the others on the third count, keeping the taste of dignity alive long after the ending.
A very enjoyable piece, Frederik!

Hi Hans, and welcome to MIMF.dk https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thank you very much for your review of my "Intermezzo" - I'm glad you like it! Regarding the end note: yes, it is indeed a humoristic "artefact", but I don't think it is way out of order in regard to the general caracter of the piece - it is after all an only 1 minute long and have a lighter touch to it (even though the piece is dead serious, I'm always serious about music - even when it contains humor). But I do see what you mean.

I have just written a piece myself for Brass quintet, which I would like to present to this forum (and which I'd like to have performed). Is it appropriate?

What a beautiful piece. Though I did notice the small clash at about 35 seconds in. I'm quite pleased, though, with the intricate weaving of art and sound. Two thumbs way up!

Guden tak Frederik,

Aaah finally my pianistic ears' appetite is quenched! I'm so glad I've been giving myself a treat and perusing your CORNER today! The orchestral pieces I've enjoyed are masterful, and finally..

...on the CD Light On Your Path (http://www.magle.dk/english/cd-info/light-on-the-path/main.html)...
I found the treasure:
http://www.magle.dk/audio/priere.mp3

Which shows amazing ability in composing and performing piano. :tiphat:

I do not want to sound like that person who mentioned Lord of the Rings about the organ improvisation.. he he.. :o but being the noteworthy person I am (musical noteworthy only, or should I say noticing) I have to say that the beautiful c-g-a-f motif in Priere, if you added f-c to the end making c-g-a-f-c-f becomes Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I love that song too. I hope you don't mind my reference there.

Is Priere a theme and variations kind of thing? Isn't that a French word or name? What does it mean? I'm sorry to ask dumb questions. :shake:

I thoroughly enjoyed Phoenix, Intermezzo, Cantilena, Let there be Light and Light On Your Path. I even light the lightness of the titles (pun intended he he..). I often use for my signature 'Love and light-being'. So I am a fan, musical follower, forgive my asking:

Is there a story or myth associated with "Lys Pà Din Vej?" Your forums have lit the way, you shine very bright, but puns aside, I am inspired by the titles as well and would love to hear any stories about what they mean.

Thank you googols for your forums, music and everything. Sincerely, Teo ;)

Guten Tag

Frederik Magle

Thank you, Teo! :)

"Prière" (which means "Prayer" in French) is actually an improvisation, in the same way as the Cantilena.

The story behind "Lys på din vej" (or "Light on your path") is that Lys på din vej was a a piece I composed for - and performed at - the Christening of Prince Nikolai (Son of Prince Joachim and, then, Princess Alexandra) back in 1999. It is meant to cast light on the path of life for the child. A year later I recorded the CD "Lys på din vej", and included some improvisations, amongst them "Prière".

It is my indeed my pleasure to provide these forums, for the joy and - yes - enlightenment of music lovers from around the world!

Best regards,
Frederik

A beautiful sentiment, and a very beautiful piece of music as well.

You have completely succeeded with your forums, they have lit the way, lightened my load and maybe even enlightened me. From a sordid (musically that is) past I am now a classical pianist (hopefully).

I'm always in awe of great organs as well. Thanks you for sharing so much of your music and experiences. Wishing you every success and joy along your path! :tiphat:
