Update - Thursday, February 14th, 2008: Besides the free download (see below) you can now buy and download »Far Away« in the highest possible MP3 quality: 320 kbps for just 0.99€. The current lower quality free version will remain available, but the true "CD quality" 320k HD version is a must have for anyone who likes »Far Away« and enjoys great sound quality :)

Not only is this version encoded with a much higher bit-rate (320 vs 128 kbps) but it has also been re-mixed and re-recorded with greater dynamics and clarity so what you hear is exactly as it sounds in my studio when I composed »Far Away«.

Click here to buy the High-Quality version of »Far Away« (http://www.shop2download.com/magle/)

Note to Mac-users: The MP3 download is 100% compatible with Macs and iPods! The only incompatibility on the music store is the 30-second samples, which currently does not work on a Mac. Instead I recommend you download the free version as a "sample".

You can also buy »Far Away« on iTunes (http://itunes.apple.com/album/far-away/id369169937) (in 256kbps AAC, which is almost the same quality as the 320kbps MP3)

October 22nd, 2003.

I just finished revising a piece I composed about 6 months ago. The sound and arrangement/orchestrations has been improved, and now I have decided to post the music here exclusively for free download!

The piece is called »Far Away«. It's highly inspired by drama/action/sci-fi "film-scores" and composed and recorded 100% in my own studio using mostly electronic instruments (but also some "acoustic" instruments such as an "Irish Pennywhistle").

I hope you enjoy this music, and as always, comments are most welcomed!

Spændende... - hvad består dit eget "studio" af? - hvilket software/hardware bruger du til sådan noget her? sequencer?

corno

I hope you don't mind that I reply in English in this thread, Corno.
(feel free to reply back in danish, though. Could be an interesting language mix https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif)

Corno asked about my studio and equipment...

I primarely use a midi-sequenzer and audio (recording/editing) application called "Logic Platinum (6.3.1)" running on an Apple PowerBook G4 (with Mac OS X 10.3) with two external (1/2 terabyte) FireWire disks for the audio files and backup.
For use with Logic I have a collection of plug-ins and software synthesizers.

I also have a Hornung & Møller Grand Piano, a Yahama Digital Piano (P-150) and several Roland synthesizers and sound-modules.

I mainly used Audix microphones for the recording of the "acoustic" instruments. When it's time to mix, I have several good effects, amongst them a T.C.Electronics Finalizer (96K) and M2000 reverb.

I have more equipments than that, but this is the most important for this production (Far Away).

I was also asked about the possibility that I could make pdf-files with some of my scores:
Absolutely, I am thinking about uploading the scores of "The Hope" and "Phoenix" and will let you know here, when it's ready! https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif

well... there's nothing wrong in practising ones Enligsh... so here goes https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif heh...

Ok, so the entire score is set up in Logic? or do you use another program for making your score? - I personally use Finale and Sibelius for notetyping purposes. - I had a brief interaction with a light version of Logic once some years ago, but haven't used it much.
I gather there must be a whole lot of setting up such a sequencer to get anything worth listening to.
2 1/2 terabyte disk... that sounds like an awfull lot, but ok... it's maybe not what's required for work with harddisk recording and sequencing programs, or?

I'm looking forward to the pdf's.

- men hva'...

I just listened to "Cantilena" and "Far Away." Both are gorgeous pieces. https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif Can you let me know when/if you will make any of the organ scores available for purchase?

Frederik Magle
Aug-25-2005, 14:45
Thanks Mac! I'm glad you like them. The preparation of the organ score for the Cantilena is on pause until I have finished composing my symphonic poem "Cantabile", but it will come out (sometime early next year hopefully). When it's ready I will write about it here and on my personal website (http://www.magle.dk/composer-bio.html) https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

"Far Away" was never really intended for an organ score, so that's not top priority, but you never know https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hi Jette, I haven't dropped that project but unfortunately I can't give it top priority right now, though I'm definitely going to take a look at it soon. Please be patient https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks for the comment, Frederik, I'm glad you like »Far Away« https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Btw, to celebrate the new year, I have just re-encoded and re-uploaded the MP3-file in a slightly but audibly better audio quality (128kbps vs. 112kbps). I also made some (very) minor changes to the orchestration at the same time - see if you can spot them https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif I recommend anyone who downloaded the "old" 112kbps file to re-download this new improved one.

Far Away is Amazing! The first part makes me imagine standing on a high pinnacle overlooking beautiful canyonlands on a clear day, or turn around and around on a bright starry night watching the stars. The ending sounded very Native American. I Love it!!!

[quote=Frederik Magle;110]I just finished revising a piece I composed about 6 months ago. The sound and arrangement/orchestrations has been improved, and now I have decided to post the music here exclusively for free download!!! Update January 9th, 2006: I have recently done a few minor additional revisions and has now re-uploaded the piece in a slightly (yet audibly) higher audio quality than before. The MP3-file has been encoded using LAME (v.3.96.1 --alt-preset cbr 128).

The piece is called »Far Away«. It's highly inspired by drama/action/sci-fi "film-scores" and composed and recorded 100% in my own studio using mostly electronic instruments (but also some "acoustic" instruments such as an "Irish Pennywhistle").....end quote]

Frederik, I just listened to this again, and even though I'm selfishly hoping that you will finish some of your works into CD form (and thus would hold off on getting into film music just yet), I have to say this piece is PERFECT film music! Right up there with my favorite film music composers such as Hans Zimmer, Mark Isham, John Williams, Harry Gregson-Williams, Howard Shore, and John Barry...."Far Away" is Wonderful stuff! I could see it for the Bourne Identity and Bourne Ultimatum movies, for example, Easy. Thank you!

Firstly, a much belated thank you for your wonderful comments, Susanne! Even though I can sometimes take (way too) time to reply, I appreciate your feedback very much.

Secondly, »Far Away« will within a few days (expected Monday or Tuesday) be available in a very high quality version that can be exclusively downloaded from my new online music store (http://www.magle.dk/buy-music.html). Not only will this version be encoded in 320 kbps MP3 versus the free version's 128 kbps, but it will also have a larger dynamic range as I have made a new "mix" of the piece for the new release, without the use of compression - allowing you to hear the music just like it sounds in my studio!

Finally, I have made a new cover for the new release of »Far Away«:

Kind regards,
Frederik
