All wrong?!! Not in this navy!... I mean on this board https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/icons/wink.gif

Anyway, when you reach 50 posts, you will be entitled "Commander of Notes, Dots and at times also Slurs"

(btw, if you wish I can also give you a custom title now, but it will have to follow the regular ranks https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/icons/tongue.gif )

Former Subject Title for this thread: New titles! Anyone offended? Then shu...speak up ;-)

The title system is based on your post count: The more posts you make the higher your "rank". Furthermore as you progress you will get access to closed and even hidden forums (eg. the "Officer's Mess" and the "Flag Officers' Council & Lounge"). The titles are ranging from Recruit (seaman) and all the way up to Music Admiral!!!

Based on No. of posts:

0 = Skulker https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif
1 = Recruit
3 = Apprentice, baby violin
6 = Seaman, 2nd violin
10 = Seaman, 1st violin
15 = Midshipman, 2nd Assistant Concertmaster

Officers (with access to the "Officers' Mess"):
25 = Ensign, Principal Trumpet
35 = Lieutenant, Associate Concertmaster
50 = Lieutenant, Concertmaster
75 = Lieutenant Commander, Principal Concertmaster
100 = Commander, Assistant Conductor
150 = Captain of the Orchestra

Flag Officers (with access to the "Flag Officers' Council & Lounge"):
250 = Commodore [of Water Music*]
500 = Rear Admiral [Appassionata*]
1000 = Vice Admiral [con Forza*]
2500 = Admiral [+always custom title*]
5000 = 5 Star Music Admiral [+always custom title*] (+ personal forum **)

* Everyone reaching the "rank" of "Commodore" (250 posts) and above can get a [custom title] of their own choice!
** Aside from the title, every 5 Star Admiral gets a personal sub-forum (open or closed ad libitum) on Magle International Music Forums which he/she can moderate at will.

NEW OPTION - CIVILIANS!:
If anyone dislikes the notion of being entitled with a "naval rank", but would still like to post actively on this forum, there is now the option of renouncing your "rank" and get the title Civilian instead. Contact me with the request (PM, email or a post in this thread). You can become "Civilian" regardless of your post-count. The only disadvantage for a "Civilian" is lack of access to the "Officers' Mess" and "Flag Officer's Council" forums. In every other regard a "Civilian" has the full posting privileges of other members of equal post-count.

If you would like to go back to the "naval rank" titles (perhaps to check out what's going on in the "Officers' Mess"), you can do that as well if you have a post-count of minimum 100 posts - though only three switches can happen a year (per member) at max. Also, if you go from "Civilian" to "Navy" you will get a "rank" one step lower than the current norm for your post-count.

other suggestions are also welcomed.

[EDIT: OK, the titles have been "musicalised" a little]
[EDIT2: spiced up the lower ranks a bit, split "seaman" rank in "2nd & 1st violin"]
[EDIT3: introducing landlubbers...eh...I mean "civilians" https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif]
[EDIT4: added "Midshipman" rank]
[EDIT5: more "orchestral" ranks]
[EDIT6: Added personal forums for 5 Star Admirals]
[EDIT7: Minor changes]

Well, after very careful consideration I have decided to change my own title back to the neutral and more serious "Administrator" - not because of Corno's mutiny! (Let's just say he now knows what it feels like to be keelhauled... https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/icons/wink.gif). The reason is that people who visit this site for the first time might get the wrong impression. When there are a lot more users here one day I might change my title to "Admiral of the Musical Fleet" again, but for now only you - the users - have the interesting titles!

As you can see from the edit I made to the first post in this thread, I have introduced a new option: "Civilian". I doubt that there are anyone truly offended by my use of naval ranks, but anyway: Now you can (for whatever reason) chose the be entitled "Civilian" instead of a naval rank.

Civilians are of course "full" members, just like all others, but their title remains the same no matter how many posts they make (one or one hundred posts, a "civilian" stays a "civilian"). Also civilians don't have access to the "Officers' mess" (special part of the forum visible only to members with more than 15 posts and rank of Ensign or higher). Besides from that there are no limitations. Always remember (as Cmdr. Pamadu said so well) this is all in good fun! https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm sorry that I cannot accommodate your request, Ensign Trebbien. The reason for that is that whenever I edit a title manually (which I would have to do in your case), the title will no longer automatically be upgraded in the future (unless I reset the entire system including all custom titles), and I will have to do that manually every time (one of the reasons that "custom titles" are only introduced after 100 posts).
But don't despair, just five more posts and you will become "Lieutenant, Associate Concertmaster"!! https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I really like the naval/musician theme you used with the forum titles. I can't wait until I reach Commodore, so I can make my own custom one. Should be "Official Forum Guitarist", or something along those lines. Are there any specific rules (besides the obvious) that apply when choosing your custom forum name?

Frederik Magle
Oct-15-2005, 15:12
Besides the obvious (no offensive language, etc.) there is a rule that the title must start with the "standard" naval rank (e.g. Commodore, Read Admiral, etc.) - or "Civilian" (if you have selected to be titled that). Also, "official" forum guitarist would probably not be possible, but "Commodore, Forum Guitarist" (or something like that) would be fine https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Here's an advance notice about a major change to the title/rank system that will take place beginning on December 15th, 2005 (2 months from today). This has been planned for a while, and I'm announcing it now to give people time to prepare and to allow for suggestions and feedback from you https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The upcoming "title-ladder" will look like this:

0 = Skulker
1 = Recruit, Pianissimo
5 = Apprentice, Piano
10 = Seaman, Mezzoforte
25 = Midshipman, Forte

Officers (with access to the "Officers' Mess"):
50 = Ensign, 2nd Assistant Concertmaster
75 = Lieutenant, Associate Concertmaster
100 = Lieutenant Commander, Concertmaster
150 = Commander, Principal Concertmaster
250 = Captain [of the Orchestra*]

Flag Officers (with access to the "Flag Officers' Council & Lounge"):
500 = Commodore [of Water Music**]
1000 = Rear Admiral [Appassionata**]
2500 = Vice Admiral [con Forza**]
5000 = Admiral [+always custom title**]
10000 = 5 Star Music Admiral [+always custom title**]

(* = can get custom title until February 1st, 2006 but will keep it permanently)
(** = can have custom title)

Important Note: NO ONE who has reached "Ensign" or higher will "lose" rank when the change happens on December 15th - You will keep whatever rank you have at the time, but it will just take a little longer to advance after that

In British and U.S. Navies (and the U.S. Coast Guard, where I served) you have Petty Officers (NCOs) and Chief Petty Officers (senior NCOs) following Seamen https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Dunno if that's of interest or not https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Frederik Magle
Oct-17-2005, 21:35
Indeed it is of interest.

I did do a little research before making the titles, and I'm aware of the Petty Officers, but it was my impression that the being petty officer is not a requisite before becoming an officer, but I maybe wrong about that?

I thought that "Petty Officers" was like a line in itself with many petty officer ranks or "classes". In the US there are also: "Senior Chief Petty Officers", "Master Chief Petty Officers", "Command Master Chief Petty Officers" and even a "Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy". So my impression was that after being a seaman, one could either become petty officer or officer?

Even though the titles are all just in good fun https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif, I'm very interested in getting the ranks "correct", so help pointing out errors is welcomed!

KBOC
Oct-17-2005, 22:46
Petty Officers are enlisted, they are the equivelent of Corporals and Sergeants in land units.

CPOs are congressionally approved (in the U.S.) to be senior NCOs.

In the U.S. the ratings are thus (for Enlisted)

Seaman Recruit
Seaman Apprentice
Seaman
Petty Officer 3rd Class
Petty Officer 2nd Class
Petty Officer 1st Class
Chief Petty Officer
Senior Chief Petty Officer
Master Chief Petty Officer
Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (only one holds this rate).

Officers Ranks (very Rank indeed...)

Ensign
Lieutenant Junior Grade
Lieutenant
Lieutenant Commander
Commander
Captain
Commodore
Rear Admiral
Vice Admiral
Admiral

Frederik Magle
Oct-18-2005, 14:50
Thanks. Overall I think I'll leave the "ranks" mostly as they are for now - as the mix between "US Navy" and British "Royal Navy" they are. (comparision chart here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_and_U.S._military_ranks_compared)).

The idea being that before becoming officer "candidate/cadet" (or Midshipman) one must have taken time "enlisted" as "Seaman" for 25 posts... https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Adding Petty Officers as well would make the system too complex, and potentially confusing, I think.

That's the trouble with ranks--someone feeling inferior/superior to someone else. It's fun, and it's friendly, and it's an efficient way to evaluate the significance of the forums. Any rank beyond "Friend" is superfluous.

I think it's great fun, personally. And, as a retired officer from the United States Army, it's a hoot.

Frederik Magle
Dec-05-2005, 16:21
Just a reminder that the titles will be updated on December 15th*. Since everybody will keep the ranks they have "earned" up until that point, I recommend posting a little extra to get the rank you want before the change takes place (after that it will take somewhat longer to reach the different ranks).

After the 15th, the titles will look like this:

0 = Skulker
1 = Recruit, Pianissimo
5 = Apprentice, Piano
10 = Seaman, Mezzoforte
25 = Midshipman, Forte

Officers (with access to the "Officers' Mess"):
50 = Ensign, Principal
75 = Lieutenant, Associate Concertmaster
100 = Lieutenant Commander, Concertmaster
150 = Commander, Assistant Conductor
250 = Captain [of Water Music*]

Flag Officers (with access to the "Flag Officers' Council & Lounge"):
500 = Commodore [con Forza**]
1000 = Rear Admiral [Appassionata**]
2500 = Vice Admiral [Virtuoso**]
5000 = Admiral [Maestoso**]
10000 = 5 Star Music Admiral [+always custom title**]

* Note: I may pospone the change a few days because the software switch is getting closer and for technical reasons it will be best to do the title-change after switching the software.

Dear KBOC,

You forgot Admiral of the Fleet(5-stars) - yes, it's only a wartime rank, but still, fair is fair. According to my source at Navy BUPERS, the U.S. Congress re-authorized that rank after 9/11.

No offense, eh?

Hi Gareth,

Remember - Starfleet Command uses Naval Rank https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers444.gif

Giovanni

Btw - A *few* planes and Naval Aviators perish at sea during Carrier Operations - not because they are bad aviators - because their mission is inherently dangerous - when one *shoots* and traps aircraft day in and day out, you quickly get alot of respect for the guys who fly for the navy and those manning the catapults and arresting cables - Don't ever *dial in* the weight of an F-14 Tomcat for an F-18 Hornet - what happens? You'll rip the tail-end off the aircraft and the plane goes into the sea - conversely, F-18 weight for an F-14 and the aircraft goes directly into the sea, although new appurtenances are coming on-line to catch aircraft in trouble.

Hi acciaccatura,

This is not an american forum - it's International! The Danes have a wonderful seafaring tradition of which they are justifiably proud of. If one works as a sailor in the Merchant Marine there is always someone who will have a greater rank than you do. You have your basic seaman and all other ranks leading to the top as captain or in some other firms as admiral.

I think Mr. Magle is not intentionally *militarising* this site - he is the owner and he sets the rules - on the sea the captain's word is law. In the Merchant Marine if a deckhand does not obey the captain, that deckhand is put into the brig. Let me put it in another way: take part in the myriad discussions on this site - work up through the ranks and you too might make captain or above.

Above all, this is a fun site - the rank designations can be viewed as an indicator of how much you contribute - not of your military prowess - lighten up - life's too short to get bogged down in minutiae.

Peace and Blessings Aplenty,

Giovanni https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers444.gif

ps. Hey, I bet this site could use Russian or Chinese military ranks (ready to learn a foreign language and it's peoples traditions?) I, myself speak read and write Russian and Chinese so no problems there or we can use Starfleet ranks - maybe Klingon ranks or Romulan ranks or... https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nut.gif https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/whistling2.gif https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/out.gif

pps. Denmark has Maersk - International Reach - someone is deckhand, someone is captain... https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

If you take a closer look, you will find a few smileys in my post... which was supposed to exercise a modicum of sarcasm... I regret if said sarcasm has been lost on readers... https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead3.gif

Well, the truth is that I DO dislike military ranks, and for that reason I shall ask to be relieved from service... and I find it commendable that the forum leader has provided this opportunity https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers444.gif https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/trump.gif

No sarcasm has been lost on this reader https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Do keep up your posting however - are you playing any interesting piano compositions?

I personally like this system, as it encourages members to participate. Too many forums I've seen have just died due to inactivity, although I doubt that's a problem here. https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Lol, the system is just fine - now if we could just have some substitution for navy ranks... i was thinking, starting off as a lowly violist and ending up the CEO of the amusement park... wouldn't that be something to strive for? https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devil.gif

Hmm, I noticed that I have no access to the "Officer's Mess" which I should have according to my post count. But I guess that passengers are a no-no at the captain's table? https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

You aren't allowed to visit the Officers' Mess if you're a Civilian. Sorry.

Well, this does somewhat make for a slight dilemma. As you, acciaccatura, are the first member that has chosen to become "Civilian" I must admit I have not really considered the obivious problem arising about access to the Officers' Mess until now. The way I see I have three choices on what to do (ah, the magic number https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif):

A. Let things be as they are now, "discriminating" against Civilians https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

B. Change the name and character of the "Officers' Mess" thus allowing "civilians" access (but honestly, a majority of the activity going on in there at the moment is congratulating each other on "promotions" - just as in real life I suppose https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

C. Making a "Mess" for the "civilian" members:
The "Civilian Hippie Lefties Pinko Liberal Green Pacifist Activist Commie-Anarchist Squatter's Quarters" (kiddin! https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif)

I need to ponder this a little. "B" would destroy some of the fun of the current system. "C" could make a fun alternative choice, but the potential disadvantage would be a segregation of members that I would certainly not want, and - if implemented - it would be for a trial period at first (probably of a couple of months to begin with).

I'n the meantime, here's a little addenum to the rules about titles:

• Anyone can at any time request to get the title of "civilian" instead of a "naval rank". The change will happpen as soon as I have the time to edit the user's profile (it must be done manually).

• If you would like to go back to the "naval rank" titles (perhaps to check out what's going on in the "Officers' Mess"), you can do that as well if you have made minimum 100 posts - though only three switches can happen a year (per member) at max. Also, if you go from "Civilian" to "Navy" you will get a "rank" one step lower than the current norm for your post-count.

We could just raise the post count for civilians to enter the Officers' Mess to 75 or 100. If it is changed to 100, then the civilians still have a goal to reach by posting (which was the original purpose of ranks, n'est-ce pas?), while still penalizing them slightly for being civilians.

That's a good suggestion Colorful Mage! (Damn, so much for the three magic choices... https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif). And for now, that's the way it will be. with the current titles it will require 50 posts, after the upcoming change (with has been postponed a little, I'm sorry) it will be 100 posts.

I'm possibly also going to make some additional "ranks" for Civilians, but - like the access to the Officers' Mess - they will require more posts and also be fewer in number (the first will probably start at 100 posts, the next at 250, and then 500, 1000, and so on). The reason for this is that after a user's title has been changed to "Civilian" any further changes must be done manually by me. The automated system is based on the "naval ranks".

Anyhow, I've finalized the system and "ranks" for "Civilians" now (though note that I may change this again later)...

First the upcoming Naval "ranks":

0 = Skulker
1 = Recruit, Pianissimo
5 = Apprentice, Piano
10 = Seaman, Mezzoforte
25 = Midshipman, Forte

Officers (with access to the "Officers' Mess"):
50 = Ensign, Principal
75 = Lieutenant, Associate Concertmaster
100 = Lieutenant Commander, Concertmaster
150 = Commander, Assistant Conductor
250 = Captain of Water Music

Flag Officers (with access to the "Flag Officers' Council & Lounge"):
500 = Commodore [con Forza*]
1000 = Rear Admiral [Appassionata*]
2500 = Vice Admiral [Virtuoso*]
5000 = Admiral [Maestoso*]
10000 = 5 Star Music Admiral [+always custom title*]

Next, the Civilian "hierarchy":

1 = Civilian
100 (currently 50) = Associate in Music (+Access to the "Officers' Mess")
250 = Bachelor of Music
1000 = Musicae Magister [+custom title*] (+Access to the "Flag Officers' Council & Lounge")
2500 = Reader, Mus.D, MA [+custom title*]
5000 = Professor, Mus.D, MA [+custom title*]

* = can have custom title besides the regular title

Somehow this thread has been messed up during the transfer from the old forum, so I've moved it here and changed it to a discussion thread while making a new "sticky" thread about the user titles in the information forum.

Some of you may have noticed that your user title has been changed. This is a change that has been planned for a while (see the previous post), but I had hoped that all current users could have kept their current titles instead of being "demoted". Unfortunately that was not technically possible. Instead I have have manually edited all users with a current "rank" of "Flag Officer", so they may keep the current rank. (It's simply impossible for me to manually edit all users, so I decided to set the limit at users who can already have a custom title - "flag officers")

But to all that has not kept their ranks; don't worry, you can easily catch up to the flag officers. Current Flag Officers will not be "promoted" further until they have reached a post count by the new standard, so go ahead and post and catch up! ;)

Sorry to dig up this old thread, but just wondering... why the naval titles in the first place? The music titles (concertmaster etc.) are nice and intuitive, but why naval titles on a music site?

This is not criticism, I'm just wondering.

Ah, that is a good question. It's been so many years I hardly remember what made me chose the naval ranks in the first place :D I do believe the inspiration came in part from working with the Royal Danish Naval Band and a general interest in seafaring. It may not be the most obvious choice for a music forum but it has become a MIMF tradition now - reminding us of the good old days. This forum has actually gone through many changes through time (and in "internet time" it's actually a quite old forum).

My advice to all members is to only take it for what it is: a fun, quirky touch.

:)
