View Full Version : Dramtic/Minor Orchestral Music

Hi there, I am looking for some suggestions to help me broaden my music collection. I tend to be into dramatic/minor key orchestral music, I am currently listening to:

Pictures at an exhibition (Ravel Orch)
Mozart's reqium
Carmina Burana
Mehndelsons Paulus
Brahms 4

Can anybody recommend anything else that i am likely to enjoy?

Ludwig van Beethoven 5th ("Destiny") and 9th ("Ode an die Freude") symphonies

Johannes Brahms "Ein Deutsches Requiem"/"A German Requiem"

Peter Tchaikowsky - entire output, more or less... you can start with his Piano Concerto in Bb-minor, his Symphonies, and his overtures like Overture Sonelle 1812.

Gustav Mahler - entire output - especially his symphonies (the 5th and 7th are one of my favorites).

Hector Berlioz - Symphonie Fantastique for instance.

Dimitri Shostakovich - entire output - among them his piano sonatas aswell as symphonies (the 7th for instance).

Igor Stravinsky - The Rite of Spring, The Firebird...

Richard Strauss - his tonepoems; Ein Heldenleben, Don Juan, Till Eulenspiegel...

There's something to start you off with - of the more "generally known" classical "masterpieces".

Thanks for that - I will have to give them a listen!

You do that.
And please report back with what, if any of them, you found interesting.
There's a lot to go through, I know... but all of it, IMO, is actually really good, so, it shouldn't be so tough. https://www.magle.dk/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Also try Bartok - Music for Strings, Percussion & Celesta - very dramatic.

A personal favorite that I alway recommend is Beethoven's String Quartet No. 13 in Bb, Mvt 5 "Cavatina". This is quite possibly the most beautiful piece of music ever written. The final scene of Mozart's Don Giovanni also comes to mind based on the description of your tastes. (Can't think of any others right now and am late for class!)
