Who likes Astronomy?

I just bought a new Astronomy magazine and some of the picture in it
are just breath taking. I used to take a telescope and look at the stars.
I would like if any of you do that now. Right now all I use is the net to
look at the stars.

Hi Ms. Judy,

Of course I love Astronomy. Its just that real Astronomy consists of so vastly much more than just gazing at planets, stars, galaxies, supernovas, and gamma ray bursts. Real Astronomy uses the whole panoply of Mathematics and Physical Sciences. Now, Astrophotography is of course a very enjoyable way of discovering new phenomena which anyone with a good telescope and a CCD Camera can use to contribute images to the Astronomy Community and possibly help the professional Astronomers with identifying new objects.

There are so many sub-disciplines in Astronomy: Celestial Mechanics, Infrared Astronomy, VLBI(very long base line interferometry), Physical Cosmology, Astrochemistry, Astrobiology...I could go on but I'll spare the forum my incessant prattle.

Cheers,

Hi Ms. Judy,

Once in a blue moon I'll buy an issue of Astronomy magazine but I find the pictures very lurid - I call it *Astro-Porn* :D:D:D:lol::lol::lol:

lol @ astro-porn

I enjoy astronomy, but I am passionate about CCD photography and the technology in refining and analysing images. (partly to do with my masters)

Hi Damien,

Are you doing your Masters program in conjuction with the Subaru Telescope or do you have your own Schmidt Telescope or other reflector with a large detector(CCD) of around 25 or more megapixels?

Just curious...

my masters is actually primarily based on air particulates, but using the same principles as astrophotography. I don't actually own a telescope - too much light pollution in Tokyo.

My masters is through an Australian university.

Since I can't afford a real telescope I use Google Earth to get my star
gazing need taken care of. Have you noticed the moon the last two nights
being almost in a lunar eclipse before it rises up a bit more? It was a
bright orange last night here.

Hi Damien,

Thanx for sharing - I wish you great success in writing your thesis about air particulates.

Cheers,

I have an 8" dobsonian telescope.

Not had much time to do much observing this year. I take an active interest in cosmology.

LOL @ Marget

You're a most cunning linguist madame!

Lost in Space is my current blip on the horizon, I'll soon get bored with it and be off on another adventure. Especially considering free to air T.V. in Australia is so woeful as to be unwatchable. I mean, there's Big Brother (which just doesn't die, go figure), then there are those repetitively tedious American CSI shows (seen one and you've seen 'em all), shall I continue?

Back to the thread - there's been a planetoid named makemake, which according to my research was a fertility god from Easter Island. Ironic, considering makemake's surface is basically frozen methane and other noxious gases. Hardly fertile, eh?

Not a very apt name then for the planetoid.

Yes I know about stupid TV, we have CSI over here, my husband likes it I don't. And as for big brother, my eyes and ears were created for better things.

Lost in Space, I must admit I have only seen bits of it, so I can't really comment.
