A very classic instrument

I wonder if anyone here plays a violin. I used to own one myself and
they have a very classy sound. I even owned an antique violin once.
The old man that sold me the antique violin picked it up and played it
as a fiddle. I just shook my head as I picked it up and played a Bach
piece like Jesu Joy of Man's Desire and the instrument sounded so
beautiful that no other not even a pipe organ would compare with it.

Hi Judy

I have never played the violin, my dad used to play, and my niece plays one in an orchestra, as well as the clarinet and piano. I like the sound of a good, well played violin, no scraping and squeaking for me.

Hi Ms. Judy,

Thats an interesting statement about the violin...Consider that Mozart saw the organ as the King of Instruments.......

I played a very unusual violin typed instrument today. Made in the
Smokey Mountains this thing was in a triangle shape with about ten
strings or more and looked Scandinavian. It was really cute. It is
called the ukelin shaped something like a mandolin and played with
a bow like a violin. Here 's the picture. I've gotta have one of these!

I used to play the violin's ugly larger sister, the viola professionally, Judy. I think the tone quality of the viola is much more pleasing to the ear (Mozart, Bach, Dvorak and Brahms can't all be wrong, as it was their favourite string insturment)

I like the Zither but the music seems to blend in with others, I watched Judy's video and immediately thought of The "Third Man" theme tune.

When I first saw this video and heard this polka I quickly thought of
a band of guys from mexico lined up with guitars of all sizes in their
samberos playing this tune as a mariachi band. It sounded just like
that to me while I played along with my guitar.:guitar:

Hi, excuse my ignorance but what is the difference of playing as a fiddle as to a violin? Nigel calls himself a fiddle player:)

Great article CD,

So the main difference is in technique and, of course, playing abilities.
My mom and sister were the "string" players in our family. My sister still has, and plays, my moms violin, but her principal instrument is the viola. I rather enjoy the sonorous tones of the viola over the violin.

Imho, I fail to see how a violin can even be possibly compared to the pipe organ ... and not because of any biased thoughts because of being an accomplished organist.
The violin cannot produce the same exact tones as the organ, and vice versa ... so, how is this comparison achieved? Each stands alone on its own merits and as such, imho, has no superiority over the other.

Oops! I'm sorry that I goofed up again. There are also some pipe
organs that are unique wither the instrument is very huge, old, small,
or very pretty. Sorry I'm known to goof up and show what kind of
donkey I am.

Hi Master Krummhorn,

You're most welcome dear sir. I totally agree with you about the Viola - the sound is so much more *developed* than that of the violin imho - probably because of the larger body and thicker strings. Sometimes I pine for three more string divisions, ergo, a cello piccolo, a piccolo bass, and an octobass; as this would give a *meatier* sound to the string orchestra.

Cheers,
