hello,

I have heard about ( and even downloaded) the virtual pipeorgan softwares like Jorgan and My Organ. But I have no idea how to go on further to use this wonderful application . Anybody here has experience with MIDI and the rest of the processes related to activating this application . please share it with me .

thanks in advance,

Alex:)

Hi Alex,

I run both (and Miditzer and Hauptwerk) so I should be able to help. We will need a little more information from you, however, before we can give real advice.

What Computer will you be running the Virtual Pipe Organ on? CPU? Memory?
What MIDI keyboards do you have?
Sound Card?

Do you want to use both jOrgan and MyOrgan, or do you want to focus on one first and then the other?

It is wonderful to get your own VPO going... :-)

Hi again,

For some quick classical jOrgan VPOs take a look at http://www.rite-instruments.de/data/entry.htm. The Praestant1 is a great way to start.

A good sampleset to start with when using MyOrgan is Gernot's Happy Birthday Organ http://www.prospectum.com/en/organs/hb/hb.htm. Another good one is the Jeux D'orgues from Joseph Basquin at http://www.jeuxdorgues.com/en/romans.php. Also worth trying is Mark Beverley's Prudhoe Methodist Church Organ at http://www.rkbev.com/prudhoemethodist.html. Hope this helps as well :-)

Thanx Graham,

to start with I have a basic keyboard (Yamaha PSR 260) with MIDI (IN and OUT) ports . then I have a PC with 40GB hard disk and 256MB RAM. I'm sorry I have no Idea about the sound card which I have , But if it is necessary I dont mind buying a soundblaster sound card.I also have a USB MIDI interface.
And at first I want to install any one of the two softwares.

thankyou Graham.

Hi Alex,

I assume you're using WindowsXP? Do you know what CPU your computer has?
The Yamaha is fine for getting started.

Get ASIO4ALL (Generic ASIO driver for low latency Audio) from http://www.asio4all.com/
Install ASIO4ALL, and reboot.

Get MyOrgan from http://myorgan.sourceforge.net/ (http://myorgan.sourceforge.net/)
Install MyOrgan and then run it. The MIDI/Audio configuration should open. In the MIDI section, select the interface that your Yamaha is configured to (if you need help with setting this up just post here and we'll help). In the Audio section select ASIO4ALL.
Click on the MIDI messages tab and see which MIDI channels Manual 1 (Pedal), etc. are configured to. This tells you what MIDI channel to configure your Keyboard to in order to play that manual on the Virtual Organ

Download the Jeux D'orgues (http://www.jeuxdorgues.com/media/jeuxdorgues2_hauptwerk.rar) and extract it. Then open it with MyOrgan (File -> Open). You will see three *.organ files. Any one of them should work fine.

If ASIO4ALL does not work on your system, then use one of the DirectSound drivers.

Let us know if you have any questions :-)

Hi Graham,

My CPU has an AMD Athlon processor and the OS is windows XP. So, do I need a Sound blaster sound card? or any sound card will be fine?. I will try it out and let you know.

thankyou .

Hi Alex,

I use the onboard soundchip that came with my motherboard, so a soundblaster isn't neccesary to have a good VPO (Virtual Pipe Organ).

hello Graham,

Dear Graham,
I tried My organ yesterday............... BINGO!!!!!!! it worked in my PC.... no latency...... at all........ only thing was sound was not that satisfactory... may be because my PC had the worlds worst sound system attached to it........:).
there was no latency at all...... and as soon as the sound font was loaded I could play the great organ.......... but there were a few problems.......

1. As I have only one external key board..... I used the couplers and could make the swell also play along with great....... but the pedal was not playing when the coupler was activated...........:confused:.

2. when i tried to switch on the finger pistons...... all the stops are getting switched off............ :confused:.

3. can i attach more keyboards (daisy chain) to the existing USB MIDI interface?????

thank you very much for your support.........

Alex.

Hi Alex,
Great that it's working!

Could you describe what you mean by 'only thing was sound was not that satisfactory'? Did the sound break up, sound like it was distorted, was there too much reverb, not enough reverb, etc...

Please also just remind me what program your using - I originally suggested jOrgan and MyOrgan and I can't remember which one we're dealing with here now.

1. It sounds like you were playing the Great and coupling using the Swell to Great works (as it should). Does the organ have a Pedal to Great coupler? This would be unusual. When I know which organ we're dealing with I should be able to help you get it working using a different method.

2. The finger pistons are probably set to 'blank'. You will need to set them yourself using the SET piston

3. Tell me more about your USB Midi interface. Does it have more than one MIDI IN socket?

Glad to help!

dear Graham,

Right now Iam using 'my organ with Jeux D'orgues sound fond. the stops were sounding a bit distorted... like the trumpet 8' was sounding harsh............i don't know wether the coupler was pedal to great or great to pedal........ my USB MIDI interface is MIDI spot..... with one MIDI in and one MIDI out port........

thanks.
Alex.

Feb-02-2009, 09:26
Hi Alex,

Right, in the MyOrgan top menu click on Audio -> Settings. Click on the MIDI Messages Tab. In the list, double click on the channel property for Manual 1 (Pedal). Decrease the Channel property to 1 (i.e. make the Pedals respond to MIDI channel 1). Do the same for Manual 3 (Swell). Now you won't have to use the couplers as the one keyboard plays all three.

For the possible distortion, turn the Volume percentage down in MyOrgan (found along the top menu) and see if this makes a difference.

The MIDI spot can only control 1 MIDI device. If your Keyboard has a MIDI-THRU port it might be possible to run another MIDI keyboard through the MIDI-THRU.

Have fun!

Try the HW1 sample sets from
http://www.prospectum.com/en/organs/freestuff.htm

I'll think of some more when I have a bit more time :-)

Hi Alex,

Also worth trying is Mark Beverley's Prudhoe Methodist Church Organ at http://www.rkbev.com/prudhoemethodist.html (http://www.rkbev.com/prudhoemethodist.html) and the Orgue de Salon / House Organ from http://duphly.free.fr/en/index.html (there are also some other instruments here... a Carillon and some Harpsichords).

It is possible to combine the ranks from various organs and create your own disposition. I would suggest that you get more comfortable with using MyOrgan before we go down that road though :-)

In regard to reverb... we use the reverb that comes with our soundcard. We have a bunch of different reverbs possible and most often use either 'Stone Room' or 'Ampitheatre'. Does you sound card do reverb settings?

There is another virtual organ program that was produced by the author of MyOrgan called Toccatta that allows the use of VST effects. I have only briefly used it as it doesn't have a virtual organ graphical interface, just a tick-box interface. You can get Toccatta from http://www.virtual-organs.com/

Have fun!

dear Graham,

Thanks for that information...... I can try changing the reverb in my sound card........ as you said I will first get used to the software........ :) ........ Now, If i want to set the finger pistons.... on to my computer key board ( as i want to operate the pistons using the key board rather than the mouse ) what should I do??????

thank you,

Alex.

Hi Alex,
You will need to edit the .organ file (organ definition file - ODF). This can be done using Notepad or another text editor.

In the ODF you will find the separate stop [Stop00x] definitions for each of ranks on the manuals. In the stop definition is the "ShortcutKey=XXX" property. Change whatever number is there (sometimes it is just left empty) to the keyboard shortcut number that you want to use to activate the rank using your computer keyboard.

I have attached a ZIP file that contains a web utility (that I downloaded some time ago) for getting the keyboard number codes. Load the htm in your browser and then press the keys on your computer keyboard that you want to use. A message window will popup giving you the keyscan number to use in the ODF.

Once you have modified the ODF, save it and load it up in MyOrgan to test that the keys work.

Graham,
Just a slight correction. Toccata was not written by the author of MyOrgan, and for the moment its author seems to have abandoned any further development. MyOrgan seems to be without further development also. Nonetheless it gives great results.
Thank you for giving us the link to that Dutch site.

Opps, you're right! My applogies, Toccata was written by John Samuel. I had forgotten that. I wish he'd open the sourcecode to it like Kirk Meyer did with MyOrgan... Thanks for correcting me :-)

And the keycode ..zip folder is not opening in my system..... can you please sent it again.

Thanks,

Alex...

Mar-03-2009, 13:41
Hi Alex,

The zip download works fine for me, so instead of uploading it again I used it to make a table of information for you to use:

0 = 49
1 = 50
2 = 51
3 = 52
...
9 = 57

a = 65
b = 66
c = 67
...
y = 89
z = 90

; = 186
, = 188
. = 190
/ = 191
' = 192

To use the keyboard keys you need to change the 'ShortcutKey=xxx' property in the rank element to match the keyboard key number. So to use '1' as the shortcut to [Stop004]
Name=PRINCIPAL 16

Change the ShortcutKey property to:
ShortcutKey=050

Save the disposition and then reload it.

Let me know if you're still having trouble with it.

Hi Alex, the organ definition file is usually within the folder stucture of the sample set. It is the .organ file that you load in MyOrgan. You can edit the file with a text editor.

Mar-13-2009, 07:43
Hi Alex,

The ODF is not a .txt file... it is an .organ file (it looks like you don't have file extensions showing in Windows Explorer and therefore cannot see which file is an .organ file - see http://www.wikihow.com/Disable-Hidden-File-Extensions-in-Windows-XP to enable you to see them). The Jeux D'orgues 2 has three of them to choose from: stiehrextc30a.organ, stiehrextc60a.organ, and stiehrrdc30a.organ. The 30 and 60 in the name gives you the number of combination pistons configured.

Open stiehrextc30a.organ with Notepad. The beginning should look like this:
;################################################# ###########################
; Stiehr-Mockers, Eglise Protestante (1843)
; Samples by Joseph Basquin - http://www.jeuxdorgues.com
; edited for Hauptwerk by Jonathan Orwig
; MIDI Programmer notes: Reversibles PrCh 100-124; Divisionals PrCh 1-8
; Generals PrCh 12-41; GC PrCh 99 - suggested Hauptwerk output volume 25%
;################################################# ###########################

[Organ]
HauptwerkOrganFileFormatVersion=1.20
ChurchName=Romanswiller, Eglise protestante
ChurchAddress=N/A
OrganBuilder=Stiehr-Mockers
OrganBuildDate=1843
OrganComments=Prepared
RecordingDetails=Recorded 2000
InfoFilename=www.jeuxdorgues.com
NumberOfManuals=2
HasPedals=Y
...... etc .....

Now scroll down a bit a you will see the Manual Definition section:
[Manual000]
Name=PEDAL
.... etc ....

Then the coupler section, and then the section you're looking for, the stop section - looks like this:

;STOP SECTION******************************************* *********************************

[Stop001]
Name= Soubasse 16'
NumberOfLogicalPipes=32
.... etc ....

This is where you will configure the Stops to respond to the computer keyboard by changing the 'ShortcutKey=052' to whatever number you want this stop to respond to.

Hope that helps!! :-)

Dear All,

Gernot's Happy Birthday Organ is supposed to be a free download , right? But now it is asking for a username and password

http://www.prospectum.com/en/organs/hb/hb.htm

is it a mistake , or have they restricted the download.

Alex.

greatcyber
Dec-05-2009, 02:45
They haven't restricted the download but they did just revise their website last month. IMHO the new look is quite distracting. Why they changed the mouse pointer to default to a cross-hair is beyond me...makes it look like some multimedia application. However I checked on every section of the site about downloading and there is NO link at present to get this organ sample. They do say that they will be creating a free 3 manual organ in the future, and that it will be able for download. Maybe they will not release the Happy Birthday Organ again until this is accomplished. But to have a 3 manual, non-commercial download for free will be nice. (and worth the wait). Just keep on googling and reading the forum as well as other virtual organ forums and you will be directed to many download links for free sample sets. Perhaps Krummhorne can help by posting a link to some of the threads here for your ease.

Best wishes.
