Glad at this point my VW runs on petrol, but I still think overall VW builds a great car. I've owned 6 of them over the years and never had any major problems with them.
My present ride, 2004 Jetta GLS - 1.8turbo, 5 speed manual - has 136,000 miles: original brakes pads, original clutch, original paint, still looks great. Has sport suspension with 17" rims so ride is a little harsh on our local roads which are full of potholes. Outside on the open highway the ride is comfortable and quiet and with the turbo no hill or mountain stops me from maintaining our motorway speed limits of 75 mph.

Had to take the Coupe in for an Air bag recall on Tuesday so had full services at the same time, they gave us a loan car 2013 series 3, 2 litre diesel 320d. not a bad car but the interior trim etc just seem to be a bit on the cheap looking side, the latest updates were impressive with a good head up display, we only travelled around town the motor was ok

And now, Mercedes, Honda, Mazda and Mitsubishi are in hot water for much of the same thing that VW is facing. My Jetta is petrol and a 2004, so not affected.
If this keeps up it might disrupt future sales of diesel powered cars in the US.
Makes me now wonder if the big rig engines are also cheating on emissions as they were in 1998.

Yikes, I had not heard that Lars, there are Cities that are considering banning diesels I thought London was one but I could be wrong.
Petrol is King, well until something better comes along. Electric?? Fuel cells? yep I favour fuel cells that can run on Hydrogen.ray:
I too would prefer to run on electric only - but the one hundred grand pricetag for the vehicle is a bit put off for me. Problem is still the mileage on one charge. It wouldn't work well for me when I have out of town gigs to play; and around here we must run A/C in our cars during most of the year, which causes additional drain on battery power.

Don't a good many of the taxis run on diesel in London - or at least they were more predominant when we were there in 2010.

It was pointed out a few years ago by one of the big motoring mags that the MPG figures quoted by manufacturing companies where a bit optimistic, to say the least. Stands to reason that the exhaust emissions would also be out. Top Gear also did a comparison of small diesel and petrol cars round town which showed that petrol could be more economical. In England the governments where persuaded by the green parties that diesel was a cleaner fuel, hence the company and road tax breaks they introduced. Makes you shudder at their stupidity. America was more sensible and refused to swallow this hogwash. Still I must admit that a general running figure of 55 miles per gallon impresses me for such a large heavy, not to metion quick car as my BMW so at the moment I will stick with the diesel

All advertising exaggerates and twists the facts to suit the product (as do politicians) however there is a large difference in that and what happened at VW when software is installed to deliberately give false figures, and for VW to say it was just two or three technicians that did this and management new nothing of it is a blatant lie, VW executives are not a bunch of fools.
Both Diesel and Petrol are past their use by date, I have mentioned “Fuel Cells” earlier in the thread as I have been interested in the FS for years but progress is so slow I tend to do a check only at 12 – 18 month intervals.
it seem that it is getting somewhere at last both for small applications such as vehicles and larger ones for homes and perhaps even for mass generation I give a link for a discussion on a science forum that I visit occasionally, a warning it is not an easy read but has videos and explanations to assist. I bet the Oil boys hate it lol.
