Fasten your seat belt and hold on to your hat and glasses; what power! Harmonious—certainly, but still with an edge, and the winds in particular blew me away. It exuded classic Hollywood film music in the very best sense, and was undeniably a piece that had something to say to me.

Ein Glanzlicht des Konzerts war Frederik Magles »The fairest of all roses«, eine Fantasie über den dänischen Weihnachtschoral. Das Trio überraschte mit im Raum verteilten Trompeten, sanft, aber expressiv. Man realisierte die Weihnachtsstimmung ganz sensibel und mit sowie einer herausragenden Geschlossenheit.
A highlight of the concert was Frederik Magle’s The Fairest of All Roses, a fantasy on the Danish Christmas chorale. The trio surprised the audience with trumpets positioned around the hall, gentle yet expressive. The Christmas atmosphere was realised with great sensitivity and outstanding cohesion.

I'm going to make no attempt to compare with other classical composers, because I know nothing, but I am vaguely reminded at one point by Benjamin Britten, and there are some particularly beautiful moments, especially when the strings build just over 5 minutes in, and you can hear the resonance of the cello section pushing through - and the ending is really gorgeous too.

Frederik Magle er ubetinget en begavet improvisator som med energi og spillelyst formår at holde mange forskellige typer af forløb i gang, men med al respekt for at kaste sig ind i et sådan maratonprojekt, så tror jeg nu nok jeg ville have været endnu mere selektiv og nøjedes med at lave en enkelt-cd.Frederik Magle is unquestionably a gifted improviser who, with energy and evident enjoyment, succeeds in sustaining many different kinds of musical development, but with all due respect for throwing himself into such a marathon project, I think I would have been even more selective and settled for a single CD.

En af de største og mest bemærkelsesværdige koncerter var Frederik Magles julekantate »Et nyfødt barn før evighed Gud«, som blev fremført i Messiaskirken i Charlottenlund nord for København. Mere end 200 korsangere og musikere var bragt sammen for at fremføre værket, som Frederik Magle komponerede for tre år siden på bestilling af Messiaskirkens præst, Kristian Høeg.One of the largest and most remarkable concerts was Frederik Magle’s Christmas cantata “Et nyfødt barn før evighed Gud” (“A newborn child, before eternity, God!”), performed at Messiaskirken in Charlottenlund, north of Copenhagen. More than 200 choristers and musicians had been brought together to perform the work, which Frederik Magle composed three years earlier on a commission from the church’s pastor, Kristian Høeg.

Narrative and orchestral illustration are combined so that the work emerges as a balanced whole. The way Frederik Magle unfolds the music across this large gathering of performers gives a clear indication of what he can bring home by surfing the internet of his musical imagination.

Det var et fuldbragt værk, et forløst værk, gennemkomponeret, stramt, stort og mægtigt og med et forløb, der overraskede. Frederik Magle ligner ikke nogle af de andre nutidskomponister, jeg kender. Faktisk finder jeg, at han ligger milevidt fra dem. Man mærker at han er sig selv, og at der er noget musik, som maser sig på og vil ud, endda med stor kraft. Frederik Magle skriver ikke musik for musikkens skyld, for det er ikke en opvisning i forskellige kompositionsteknikker og -holdninger. Han vil udtrykke noget, fortælle en historie, og han bruger sin teknik til at bygge stemninger og virkninger op med.It was a fully realised work, a fulfilled work, through-composed, tightly structured, grand and powerful, with a course that held surprises. Frederik Magle is unlike any of the other contemporary composers I know. In fact, I find him miles apart from them. You sense that he is his own person, and that there is music pressing to emerge, with considerable force. Frederik Magle does not write music for music’s sake; this is not a display of different compositional techniques and attitudes. He wants to express something, to tell a story, and he uses his technique to build moods and effects.
