I warmly welcome all recordings of “The Morning Sea” – whether professionally produced studio recordings or recordings made on a mobile phone. Please feel free to publish your own performance, and do let me know if you do; I would be very happy to share it on my social media platforms.

Kind regards,
Frederik

Notes:

First realised as an improvisation at the keys of the piano at Saint Paul’s Church in Copenhagen, The Morning Sea is part of Frederik Magle’s ever-growing collection of contemplative and evocative works for piano. Like a number of Magle’s works, too, images and ideas of the natural world are the core of the composition – this piece can very well be seen as a seaward extension of recent works like Sunset (1998, rev. 2008/2024), the Pastoral on ‘Nu falmer skoven trindt om land’, or ‘In the Deep Vales’ from the Piano Quartet (both 2023).

Beginning with an isolated seven-note motif that recurs as the central backbone of the entire composition, a short and understated chorale-like passage quickly unfolds into an undulating song without words. Rippling left-hand syncopation underlies a simple, patient melody as the bright, diatonic harmonies continue to root themselves evermore firmly in the lower reaches of the piano. As the melody awakens and rises, the swelling chords fill the middle of the range, embodying the expanse of the ocean and framing its scale as profound and quietly powerful.

Magle intentionally avoids many of the default musical aquaticisms – there are no cascades of shimmering arpeggios, no tumultuous roiling tremolos, no bells or birds or boat horns, because they aren’t the central image here. The sea’s serenity at daybreak is instead in crystal clear focus, and the gently-rocking back-and-forth of the accompanying line mirrors the soft lapping of surf, over the resonant depths of the chords’ harmonic foundations. The tempo and the textures are fluid throughout, lending the piece a gently mercurial quality that captures the quicksilver nature of the sea without losing the early-morning calmness at the heart of Magle’s depiction.

Even the work’s highest points, the grandest moments of drama, are two short-lived and harmonically tender peaks, both of which quickly ebb again to return to the placid peace of before. The work ends calling to mind the glinting of the morning sunlight dappling at the horizon, as the central motif returns at the higher end of the piano one final time.

Lovely piece of music, have started to learn the piece of which will take awhile, would have liked an Ariel view of yourself playing the piece so to ascertain the correct fingering. I am self taught with the piano. But again a lovely piece to listen and to learn

It just make me feel good. I really don’t enjoy contemporánean music, except Philip Glass and some other. But for me, J. S. Bach is my real God. I didn’t start with your music yet, I am not profesional in piano but I do my best with a teacher. I will start trying to play your score soon.
    All the best Frederic. .
