The Talyllyn Railway was the first preserved line in the country. Used to transport slate from the quarries dowwn to thye coast it is now probably the most famous narrow gauge railway in the world, having featured in some of the books written by the Rev. W Awdry.
The engine shown is Dolgoch built by Fletcher and Jennings in 1866 and was the first locomotive to pull a passenger train when the preservation socity was formed.
The picture below shows the end of the line where the slate wagons were winched up the first of the inclines leading up to the quarry.
