    What is this instrument called?

    Hi everybody.

I just watched the movie "Black Hawk Down" tonight. Really good movie, with a really good soundtrack. The soundtrack consisted of different music styles and also some ethnic music. There was this one instrument that I really loved in the movie.

If you open iTunes Store (I guess you can also do this in other online music stores, but this is the only one i've tried it in) and search for "Black Hawk Down", then pick that album and listen to the audio sample of track number 10 "Ashes to Ashes". In this track you can really hear this wonderful instrument. I also think that this instrument or an instrument very much alike is used in the very good television series "Battlestar Galactica".

Can anyone tell me, what the name of the instrument is? I would really appreciate that. Thanks!

    Hi Simon,

Upon listening to that track *ashes to ashes* my gut reaction was that this is only a synthesizer patch mimicking the Egyptian Bazù.

The Bazù has a small reed at the playing end, much like an oboe , only wider and somewhat thicker. It's tone is very buzzy and the conical body with a flared bell serves to enhance the buzziness.

    Cheers,

    Corno Dolce
