Quite readable, frankly ... same can't be said for Bach's other manuscripts I've seen ... then again, with two wives, oddles of children and moronic clergy one wonders how he ever had time to commit his music to paper.

Is there a museum somewhere where his original manuscripts are on show?
NEB this manuscript I took from my DVD of the Complete Bach edition. Volume 44 of the set of 44 PDFs is devoted entirely to Bach's manuscripts. This comes from the 1800s Bach Geselschaft edition.

Actually I might have painted a rather skewed picture ... there are selections of Bach's manuscripts in all genres ... no complete works, as such.
ah OK. Ya know, I've toyed with the idea many times of getting into the car and doing the tour of 'composers Europe' - Now that would be fun!

When I was playing harpsichord at College, my teacher actually asked me to try and perform from copies of JSBs originals. I played several of the 2 and 3-Part Inventions from facsimilies, but I was lousy as hell at reading moveable C-clef. Interesting exercise though.

Trying playing those chorale preludes with one staff in alto clef ... as a viola player I don't have a problem with alto clef (I thought) but reading it on the organ is an entirely different proposition.
I have a few Pachelbel pieces in alto clef ... funny, I never learned to read that in all the years of keyboard lessons ... and my sister was a violist, too ... now, I have no inclination, nor the time, but envy those who can play this on the organ.

I'm progressively typesetting the Chorales Preludes (sick of seeing commercial business making a fortune out of music that is just so out of copyright). So, when I'm finished, I'll put them up here for anyone to use (PDF).
The ones in the alto clef I'll transpose (??), change rather, to Treble clef that plays down the octave, you know the one with the little "8" at the bottom the clef's lowest curve.
Not sure that makes much difference CT64. It's still a game of mental gymnastics...
