Computer Problems

Problems like this can be difficult to troubleshoot. The problem can be occurring at your ISP, in your router(if you have one) or on the computer itself. It is not a bandwidth problem, as that would not cause a connection loss, only a slowdown -- and dsl is a dedicated line anyway, so you don't share your connection with your neighbors. The modem is an unlikely culprit as it would pretty much have to be a part failure and that would likely mean no connection at all. Try resetting your modem anyway just to be sure. If it is your router, resetting it to manufacturer specifications might solve the problem. Also, update your router to the latest firmware. If it is your computer, it is a software problem. A virus or other infection/intrusion can cause this, or a driver issue with your network card. If you have antivirus software installed, run a full system scan. If the scan finds nothing, disable your antivirus as it may be causing the problem itself. After that, update your network card drivers. If none of this works, call your ISP.

Judy,

I just read post #11. When you reconnected your telephone, did you attach a dsl filter to the line, first? If any device other than your modem that accesses the phone line is connected without a dsl filter, it will cause problems with your internet connection...

Yes I connected a filter. Now I have another problem. I would like to
turn this computer into a musical instrument but I can't find the right
software and I would like to download it free. I had one on my old 98
computer. Is there any suggestions. I think I know what I'm going to
do with that blasted modem and that is to replace it with another one
and I hope it stays on more than three minutes where I have to stop
and start the thing again. I started to buy the computer a
microphone so I could record my music like Cefobe does
with his guitar music and didn't have the money. I will
next month.

I have this wireless printer, which used to work so beautifully, but now it acts up and is impossible to connect to ;( uugggh. If it feels like it, it will do me a favor and print something, and other times it just doesnt respond - sooo unreliable!!!! I had to print something important yesterday, and I couldnt do it. I hate freaking technology - its supposed to help, but occasionally it just brings your blood pressure up, gets your blood boiling, and just drives you nuts so much, its almost unhealthy to have had it to begin with!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, I feel better now ;)

Are you looking to turn your computer into a specific instrument? Organ I presume? You might want to ask Jean Paul, he writes a lot of organ music on his computer, he might be able to give you a good advice. Some other people on the forum know quite a bit about it too. Also, I think there was a thread here somewhere that focused on computer software of that kind. If you look, you might be able to find it.

Check out your local Radio Shack, Best Buy or other electronics outlet store ... take the old one with so you can get an exact replacement.

(Disclaimer: I am not advocating nor promoting any commercial venture, only responding to the question at hand with suggestions. I have no vested personal interest in those commercial ventures listed.)

Does anyone have problems with AOL? That is what I use to get to
this forum. I've had problem all right! I thought I signed up for the
free one where they won't charge me anything and they called me up
charging me 32 dollars for having it. What do you think?

Hi Judy,

I empathize with you ... and believe me, I understand your plight ... been there, done that. Having been on staff at AOL once in my lifetime (Beta Tester - checking out new versions, software, etc) here's how it works:

You sign up for a "Free Trial Month" - If you read the ultra small fine print, it will mention that the 30 days trial can only be cancelled by the subscriber and within those 30 days. AOL will not, repeat not, automatically cancel your account after the 30 day free trial ... again, read the fine print ... it's up to you, the new subscriber to do that. If you don't pay, they will ... repeat will ... send it to collections AND continue to bill you the monthly rate until the account is settled.

Now, since I gather it's past that 30 day "Free Trial" period ... you now have an AOL account and you now owe $32, not for the "free trial" period, but for the next 30 day time period as AOL charges a month in advance (read the fine print) so if someone cancels during the month, they already have your money.

In my own situation, it took 6 months to cancel my AOL subscription when I went to a broadband (cable) internet connection, and I had to continue paying the monthly fees to AOL even though I was not using their services.

AOL is an okay outfit ... but they tend to not have enough servers in relation to the number of subscriber and they use Internet Explorer <cringe> for a web browser and seem not willing to change to something else, even though it would be faster and 5 times safer for everyone.

I do hope you can resolve your issue with AOL ... but it might take some time if that the 30 day "free" window has expired.

Does anyone else's DSL box drive you absolutely nuts? Mine still does.
I just had to restart my net more than 10 times within the last hour.

Judy,
Is this DSL box rented from your ISP, or did you purchase it outright?

If it's rented, you may want to call your ISP for repair/replacement of that box. One shouldn't have to reset it that many times to make it work.

I do know that my own cable internet company instructs us to leave the box unplugged for at least one minute before restarting it - kinda clears its cache, I suppose.
