Guns N' Roses

For those of you not in the US that don't know (or maybe you do), it takes a lot of nerve here in the states to admit that you're a big GNR fan. In fact, you'll be laughed at for doing so. They were so big, and fell so hard, they took all of their fans with them.

Well, I'm coming out. I'm a huge Guns fan, and I always have been. I grew up with the stuff, and I still can't give it up.

There is a remote chance that Axl will be coming out with his new album soon (Chinese Democracy), I will be waiting for the store to open the day that disc comes out.

Musical genious is rare, and some of you may only title one or two as such, but I have liberally labeled dozens, if not more, as geniouses, and I'm not afraid to say that Axl is one of them.

I'm not alone, there's a huge GNR forum on the net that I read occasionally, but don't participate in (I'm in denial). What I need to know is, am I alone here?

Well I`m not a Guns N`Roses fan and I wouldn`t call them genius (genius is a word I seldom use), but I do enjoy listening to 2 of their albums, Use your illusion I and Appetite for destruction

Re: Guns N\' Roses

Hasn't the new album been 'on the way' for something like 12 years?? I used to be a big fan, and since then have been interested in bands like Nine Inch Nails, Primus and Praxis so the addition of members from these bands to Guns N Roses piqued my interest a little, but is there really any chance this album's ever going to be released?

^ Ya, it has been. Tiny rumblings around say it's getting closer though. I think someone in the camp said the music is done being recorded, now they just need to mix it, print it, and market it. I hope it's not all BS.

I think you are wrong on a couple of counts. Most people in the states that liked Guns (and there's more than just a few) STILL like the band. No one is going to laugh at you for that.

Calling Axl a GENIUS on the other hand...

Plus you are posting this is in a prog metal forum, while most proggers will be open to appreciate Guns, they are unlikely to share your enthusiasm.

I'm still not sure after reading your post two or three times what is that I'm "wrong" about. I actually have been laughed at for being a Guns fan, more than once, and it is my opinion (everyone has them, and I might not like yours) that Axl is a genius. Neither of which is really a debateable topic. Lastly, this is a progressive rock & metal forum, not a progressive metal forum (does such a genre exist?). Sorry I didn't inspire you. I won't try harder next time.

You almost make it sound like you will be called a witch and burned if you admit you like their music

I personally am a BIG GNR fan, and am not scared to admit it. However what do you expect from a band that competed with some of the greatest bands (Led Zepplin, Aerosmith, AC DC, etc.) After this mad rush of rock, they just did not come out on top.

Re: Guns N\' Roses

GNR is great. I haven't heard one song from them that I haven't like. "Knockin' on Heavens Door" and "The Jungle" are too of my personal favorites.

I definatly wouldn't consider Axl to be a genious. And if he were he wouldn't be any more so than the other members of the band. I did however lose respect for him towards the end of GNR because he sold out to a certain degree in my opinion.

Don't be so hard on yourself. A lot of people like Guns N Roses, I have a lot of there songs on my iTunes. I usually listen to them once a week, not too often, but they're there. Too bad they fell apart... it would be so awesome if they were still making songs.

It would be so awesome if they were still making music.

But I don't think it would be a good idea to have some sort of reunion because bands are never as good as they used to be and I tend to lose a little respect for them, ya know?

Beastie Boys for example.

Re: Guns N\' Roses

A reunion is pretty much out of the question with GNR. I think they're still battling in bitter lawsuits over rights to music to this very day. If I'm not mistaken, Axl is taking home the lionshare (if not all) proceeds from album sales and other incomes.

I've been keeping an eye on it, and there is no further news about the upcoming album (Chinese Democracy).

Re: Guns N\' Roses

I think we should make a GNR support group. Everyone comes and posts (anonymously) about how they feel about GNR's music, experience, etc. I would be one of the first ones to sign up! :O

Re: Guns N\' Roses

Hi

I am pretty new here (1st post) and thought I'd just add something to the discussion.

I would find it odd to call GnR prog rock, but it seems like most prog rock lovers do like this genre as well. In this side of the great sea and at this southern tip of the Continent there are many GnR fans and I have not yet experienced anybody laughing at any GnR fans. As matter of fact here we (at least the small group of fans hare) do think they are gods. Maybe I'll not yet call axle a genius, but he surely used to be a very skilled musician. Slash had more than only one great moment. He had so many it would do injustice to try and name specifics.

Re: Guns N\' Roses

huh, who I have liked the most in G'n'R was Slash. I'm loving this guy. I think he's a really great musician and I admire his project - Slash's Snakepit. I like him also in Velvet Revolver but maybe with no rapture.
As for Axl - well...in my view - a charismatic person but that's all.

Very over rated. They certainly are not prog either. They are rock...

They are touring now I think, with a new guitarist.
I really only know their commercial songs, never thought much of them.

 How on earth can someone from one of the most commercial and image-oriented bands in history "sell out"? One has to first be an artist in order to sell out...

BTW...Axl Rose a genius? Bach, Mozart, Beethoven...Axl....

Yep, that sits well with me.:bawl:

Someone please start a thread about the trancendent music of Journey so I can just end my life.
