Wonderful version.

I have three versions on DVD and 3 on CD.

Rachmaninoff--Piano Concerto No.1 in F-sharp Minor, Op.1 and PIano Concerto No.4 in G Minor, Op.40. Both works are performed by the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra conducted by Leonard Slatkin with Abbey Simon on piano.
I am finding the first movement of the First and the second movement of the Fourth to be especially lyrical and quite moving.

It's been barely 5 hours since you asked the question. Do you really think all I do is sitting in front of PC, hitting F5 all day long and waiting till someone asks me something? Well, I don't.

Take a chill pill maybe.

I really think that's unfair of you to stereotype someone else just because you don't like his answer. That is bordering on racism, and we should know and be better than that! Please.

You missunderstood.

I said that because I was sure this orthographe was Polish, I went to Poland and had many difficulties until I could get their pronounciation...as Szymanowski...You have to pronounce Semanovsky...and so on. Polish are cool people (but their language is too difficult), one of my very best childhood friends was Daniel Naszewski, Polish...A priori I never judge an individual by his race nor his religion...I know even very nice Muslim people...and I don't like very much this religions, but I accept it. Please don't think this was racist...No at all....Should I take some chill pills?

Brahms--Symphony No.1 in C Minor, Op.68, performed by the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Herbert von Karajan. I find the last movement to be especially melodic and moving.

5th Symphony in e minor by Czajkowski (yes, that is Polish spelling). Performed by Karajan/BPO.

Steve, Brahms' 1st ranks in my book right after his exquiste 4th symphony. Though, unlike you, I much prefer the opening of the 1st movement. There's something powerful in it that draws my attention. Leonard Bernstein uses it in his programme on conducting. I posted it in this thread along with some other informative clips. Have a look at it. Maybe you'll find something to your liking.

Cheers

Hey Mat, I've not heard Czajkowski's music at all (no surprises) but obviously Carryon had!

I've been listening to L'Etoile (The Star) by Emmanuel Chabrier, simply delicious.

Mat, thank you so much for taking the time to do this. The next symphony I borrow from my father this week--after returning the first--shall be the fourth.

I've just finished listening to (for the first time) a recording I purchased of Gurrelieder, Schoenberg. I love it, just so lush and richly scored, heavenly. Berlin Phil with Sir Simon, plus looking at the score with it's enormous orchestra (8 flutes indeed).

The CD this came on was one of five, "Second Viennese School".
