The author David Elkind said this about adolescence.
"Friendships in childhood are usually a matter of chance, whereas in adolescence they are most often a matter of choice."
That certainly makes sense, as in the earliest stages children will tend to be friends with the children of neighbours or of friends of their parents. The starting of secondary school is a big turning point, because the child is thrown into a larger group drawn from a wider area, and has the opportunity to be more selective about choosing their own friends.
