Beta 1 release of Bureå Church

A new free (Creative Commons) sampleset for GrandOrgue is available at www.familjenpalo.se/vpo/download of the 3 man + ped instrument (33 stops) of Bureå Church, Sweden. The sampleset (prepared by Lars Palo and Graham Goode) has it's first beta release now and we'd love to get feedback from users to be able to make it even better!

It's a .7z file of 798.9 MB so have patience while downloading. Have fun playing with it!

Hi Guys,

This is a great NeoBaroque styled church organ. We have done the noise reduction, looping and release portion configurations and some adjustment of the amplitude/voicing of the notes within the ranks.

We need feedback on the loops and releases, so listen out for notes that don't sound quite right. The samples have not been 'retuned' so what you're hearing is the organ as it sounded when recorded. If there are any notes that are noticeably out of tune, please also let us know. Also if a particular note is noticeably louder or softer than the rest of the rank, let us know.

Please use the Midi Note number and the note name when reporting on issues - for example,

036-C for low C, 060-C for middle C, etc.

This just helps us easily identify which note needs attention.

hi guys,

I'm writing from the console right now, plain' this beauty !
Great full sound, excellent samples, good work guys.

Out of tune, yes, I noticed one :

In pedal rank Principal 8' the note D2 is out a bit - compare with Hw principal 8' coupled to ped ;)
Also inmy personal taste I would prefere the principal 4' in midle keyboard ranks to be a bit softer in volume, it shadows the Gedackt 8' if together..

Leave you now, test continues..


And maybe the whole pedal ranks except 16' need a bit lower volume overall?
For a big GO plenum I forced to use the recit coupler in plenum too, to hear clearly the treble voices. - Do not raise the treble volume they are perfect !

Hi Bill,

Yes, I envy Lars, who is able to sit down and play at this console in Sweden. I'm grateful to him for sharing this with the rest of use, all around the world, so that we can enjoy the sounds too :)

Hi again

Played 3 hours yesterday with this new Golden VPO.

I tell you is the best we have so far for GrandOrgue. Very, very spacial.
Of course after my first tests, I did the jack/SIR2/GO set-up to have the environtment I want when playin' organ.... pheew.... Heaven !

Graham did you notice the out of tune D2 in pedal's principal8 ?
Do you think principal4 in swell is a bit louder than it should?

Hi!

Quite a few notes here and there needs tuning actually, but it's great to get other players opinions before we go any further with the sampleset.

I made a reference recording that I tried to use when volume matching the different stops agains each other when played through GrandOrgue. But as always when it comes to recording, mic placement dictates very much how the sound is captured. We'll certainly take care to have a closer look at how the Principal 4 matches the rest when we release a new version. But I can tell you that in the real instrument the 8' stops of the swell are quite soft.

The fine thing with a vpo is that we don't need to have either/or but can have both! It's not so big a problem to have different .organ files that set the volume of individual stops as we like it. For now the more important thing is to make note of any individual notes within a rank that needs adjustment.

As a philosophy I'm inclined to try to get the original as close to the original as is realistic (it's still just a recording, right!) and then make modified versions that can be more idealistic.

Sometimes a note within a stop is softer or more "windy" in reality, but sometimes it's caused by the mic placement during recording. Many times it's a balancing act to be "true" to the instrument while still getting a good and useful sound. I'm still very much learning! That's also why I think feedback from the community is a good thing.

I'm with you on these thoughts Lars.

The same thing when I worked on my Oberhausbergen Walther organ disposition for jOrgan. In our conversation with Joseph, who took the samples back in 2000 before restoration of the real organ, we aggreed to stay close to original as possible, with fixing some issues with the samples of course (I had some hard time with some....).

But, after playin' with this organ I felt I had to make a new disposition (not available yet) with some usefull add ons, like a crescendo pedal, a swell one, combination pistons, alternate tunigs and so on. I think is now better and more playable than beffore without disturbing the original form of the real organ (add stops, or even a manual !).

With Hammarbergs I played with the combinated version as I cannot assign more than 16 stops to any buttons in my Organ controller (EL900) cause there are just 16 pistons two pedals and a switch...

Hi Panos,

I'll take another listen to the Principal 8 on the Pedal. D2 = 050-D? If you want to change the amplitude level of the Principal 4 in the Swell you can edit the .organ file and reduce the amplitude level there.

Another question that we also want to ask, once the original version is more fully tested, is what 'additional' ranks would the extended version of this organ have?

Lars and I have briefly discussed this, and here is our initial list:


  • 16' stop on the great

  • 8' reed in pedal, maybe also 32' and a 16' Principal...

  • 2 2/3 on swell (to be able to build a complete cornet there also)

  • at least one more 8' stop (a flute perhaps) on POS, and a third 1 3/5 to have a complete cornet on the pos. also
What do you think?

You're talkin about a super VPO here !

Ok I vote for all these and for a cor de nuit 8' & a gemshorn 4' for the Recit(brustwerk?) and a gamba 8' & a quintadena 8' for the great or swell, you choose...

And some news : Buree Church organ 's added to the free sets index ! (no38 and counting...)

Hello Graham and Lars,

Thanks very much for releasing these sample sets, their sound is very charming.

I have imported them into HW 3 and had to make some modifications inorder to be able to do this, as follows:
- Burea_church: imported without any problem
- Burea_church_mod: [General001] ShortcutKey=27 changed to 32 as in Burea_gravkapell_ext. HW complained about a reserved key number.
- Burea_gravkapell_ext: [Organ] DispDrawstopBackgroundImageNum=31 changed to same value as in Burea_church. Also the following 4 ...imageNum values (32,32,31,33) to be changed to the same values as in Burea_church. HW complained about wrong Image number.
- Burea_gravkapell: same changes as in Burea_gravkapell plus in [Stop101] change all Pipe00x=REF:001:003:00y to Pipe00x=REF:01:003:00y. HW complained about wrong format.

After applying those changes each disposition imported without problems, and loaded subsequently also without problem.

I have not yet installed GrandOrgue on my Windows 7 64 bit PC; therefore i imported the sample sets in HW 3.

Looking foreward to the final release of these 2 fine sample sets.

Hi Erik,

Thanks for the report back. We are aware of the Burea_church_mod import issue with HW3, thanks for posting a fix. GrandOrgue has more image backgrounds available than did HW1 so the Burea_gravkapell changes are also appreciated for those who will import to HW3 as well.

Let us know if you identify notes that are out of tune or loops that need work.
