This musician started as a pianist but gave it up because he didn't think he was able
to keep up with erroll Garner. He then became a success with a different instrument
and later changed his religion to Islam (and his name to an Islamic one)

Art Blakey? As for his Islamic name all I can come up with is -Bahianni - or something similar sounding.

In 1948-9 he became a muslem and changed name to Abdullah Ibn Buhaina.
D'you know I didn't realise this until I looked up his name for this quiz on Wikipedia.
