We are two students from Sweden and are about to do research for our final dissertation. We are in need of information about how you would buy a musical instrument, would be great if you could help us.
In more detail our questions are
- where and when do you collect information about the instrument?
- do you seek additional advise? If so, where and from whom?
- where do you ultimately buy the instrument? why?

The web is a great way of researching instruments and so is talking to musicians and teachers who may have a wealth of information and experience. Compare prices on the web as well and check e bay type sites for second hand prices. Music stores can be very helpful giving you a chance to try before you buy, and they may also have second hand instruments. Don't forget that if there is a fault on an instrument you may have little or no comeback from a private buyer. My friend recently picked up a nice soprano saxophone from a pawn shop. A very good buy and he was able to bargain the price down. There are a wealth of musicians on this forum who can give you lots of advice

Thanks for your answer teddy! Just to make sure that we understand you correctly, after comparing prices online, you would rather buy the instrument in a store? Or would you consider buying online as well? How important would you consider playing an instrument (in a store) before buying it and why?
It can certainly help to try it first, particularly if you are unfamiliar with that instrument or that model. Having someone to point out features to you can be invaluable. I would only buy online if I was certain that that product was exactly what I wanted and that I could save an appreciable amount of money. Think of buying a car. Have you driven that model and had a good look around it, or would you buy it blind.

When I replaced an elderly electronic organ with a new digital organ in 2000, I researched on line for models that I could afford and created a short list of 5 instruments by different manufacturers. I then tried each out with a prepared list of music, and after two rounds on all instruments, eliminated one from the competition. I continued in similar fashion until I decided on the instrument in my avatar. When one is spending US$10,000 or so on an instrument, one wants to select one whose sound(s) one could enjoy for long periods. I still have the instrument. I still enjoy playing a variety of music on it to this day. I spend an hour a day on it, and the sound is still enjoyable.
Yep, the first possible way is just Google something you need, and from over there, just go to some venues as eBay, or Amazon, to make some mind for a pricing.

When I bought a violin for the first time for thirty years, I went to a music store and chose the cheapest Chinese model - after all, I didn't know if I'd stick to it. After six months, I'd become addicted, so I asked the luthier in the music store to get me something better, which he did.
I think I would always rather not buy a violin 'on-line'. I need to see the article, physically, or have someone I trust arrange for me to see it.

Google would be a great choice to search for all kinds of music intruments for a quick overview. Then, if you know the specific brand of instruments, you could go into their official website, and also they may have their own social channels, like youtube, facebook, sa on and so forth. Last week, I bought a drum kit on the website of Aeroband via google. A fair shopping experience. Know their products and get involved in their social channels. Keep in touch with the brand.
