^ Oh my, David...

And hey there, Soubasse. :)

Decided to join the lunatic fringe?

Perhaps we should inject this pointless banter with the occasional serious debate too? Eg I love the song "Imagine" very much, but was J.L a bit of a hypocrite singing "Imagine no possessions" while sitting at the grand piano in the ballroom of his mansion? Discuss.

(I was stunned to discover my 16yo nephew who is very much into music and plays drums and keyboard had never even heard of "imagine". When I played it to him he raised his eyebrows as if to say my tastes were incomprehensible to him!)
Why don't you make him watch (yeah, right, as if anyone can get a 16yr old to do anything) the film The U.S. vs. John Lennon. I started watching it yesterday and became engrossed; watched the whole thing. Has anyone seen it?

As to whether JL is a hypocrite, you make a point with what you said. But I don't think so. He did say just to imagine, so... Or maybe he thought others should get rid of their possessions first. :p

Like most of my jokes it's not very funny, but (here in the uk at least) people often put "ono" after the price in a classified ad meaning "or near offer". Ok, you can laugh now. No?
Ah, got it now. I think I'm more used to 'or best offer', hence my confusion. Actually, it is funny.

And yes, I am feeling like that. This felt like the randomest place to say it :)

Yes, it's very therapeutic to have somewhere you can blurt out whatever thoughts come into your head without fear of ridicule. Works for me, anyway.

Wasn't there a time when John and Yoko were actually thrown out of the US for being a threat to national security? Seems hard to believe now.

Some random questions for a seemingly random thread. lol

Did Noah keep his bees in archives?

Do cemetary workers prefer the graveyard shift?

Do witches run spellcheckers?

How do you know when it is time to tune your bagpipes?

If the police arrest a mime artist, do they tell him he has the right to remain silent?

Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour?

The only thing I'd add to that (admittedly whilst in a flippant mood) is that there wasn't much else but the piano in that particular large ballroom. Also not forgetting that many rock stars of that generation were often told by their accountants to spend up big with their earnings for tax reasons. Ye gods I wish my accountant could tell me something like that ...

Many of them spent time out of the country for tax purposes too (Is that what was sometimes referred to as "tax exile"?) A system I've never understood being from the antipodes, but for which I am grateful since my most favourite Yes album was recorded by the group whilst in Switzerland during a "tax year").

And that gets us back to Douglas Adams  when Ford caught up with Hotblack Desiato in the Restaurant at the End of the Universe:
"He's spending a year dead for tax reasons!"

Damn what I wouldn't give for a year off right now (but that's possibly a bit extreme).

My train of thought is in danger of derailing but I hope it makes it to the next station. Allow me to toss in this tenuous link:

What does "Graveyard Shift" have to do with "Dead Ringers"? (it's always intrigued me that story ;))

 @ this thread being up to 9 pages.

They didn't actually get thrown out, but they got deportation papers slipped under their door, and there was an ensuing 'tug of war' between the gov't. and their lawyer that went on for a long time. Their phone was tapped, and they were followed (or stalked..) Scary stuff. Apparently Lennon was 'a big risk' to the gov't. what with his pesky peace preaching and all. Then Watergate brought a halt to all that illegal spying stuff... Hmm. He eventually got his green card, on the day his son Sean was born, which happened to be his birthday. That was a good day. Then later he got shot.

Ok, I left a lot of stuff out in my synopsis, but that's the general gist. They don't go into the shooting part much. Fascinating film. I'll post the link in case anyone's interested. It's about an hour and a half long.

Dead Ringers? were they the ones that got tolled off?

Great, I have to explain my very obvious mirth to a Yr 7 class!:grin:
(But I don't care that it's not the right answer, it's a damn fine one!):clap::clap:

For that, you win today's prize, a delicious pack of sausages with a label that could have two meanings.

 ^^. Yes, don't get me started on celebrity chefs, especially Gordon Ramsey who has made a lucrative career out of being a bully, or Marco Pierre White who tries to pass off childish egotism as some sort of deep wisdom! I don't know what's happened to food. When I were a lad it never took more than two words to say what you were eating, now you need half the dictionary.
"What's for dinner, Mum?"
"Oh, just the usual - chargrilled sea bream and braised artichokes on a bed of caramelised rocket with a compote of prunes and elderberry flowers."

Time for another musical interlude ...

Something to restore peace and tranquility, and with a tenuous link to our theme (You remember? I thought not!) since while you listen you're supposed to imagine the youths of ancient Greece performing their exercises in those carefree days before P.E. kit was invented.

I can't remember where I first heard this, but it may well have been a true story. A school English class were studying a book which made reference to "The oldest profession in the world." The teacher wanted to make sure the children understood.
"Now, can anyone tell me what is meant by the oldest profession in the world?" she asked.
The children all looked blank.
"Doesn't anyone know?"
At that, one girl put her hand up.
"Is it schoolteaching, Miss?"

I know this is a true story - I was there. In a quiet moment, half-way through the church service, a little girl's voice rang out:
"When are the ponies coming?"

Evening hymn

We thank thee that thy MIMF unsleeping
While earth rolls onward into night
Through all the world her watch is keeping
And rests not now by day or night.

Goodnight!

Don't know how to speak Welsh, but writing it is easy: Every time you see a D or an L, add another immediately next to it, and remove as many vowels as feasible. :D

Yes, the serious side of me applauds the efforts to save Welsh from extinction, but the mischievous side finds the thought of a nation that doesn't know how to speak its own language highly amusing. :D:D
