Sometimes, walking through the remaining Carolinian forests of The Niagara Peninsula,
the trees can crack in the wind, almost following you along.
At one point in this performance, when the snare drum felt insistent,
while the bass and piano devolved into a mild maelstrom,
I felt I was outside in the midst of it, listening again.
Beautiful, even if some muted horn would have gone a long way,
like the mournful call of a large trumpeter swan, waiting out the wind.
