I was having a few problems running some old photo editing software (I've been using it since V2 1992 now on V10 since 2003) it does what I need so why learn a new one.
I found this solution, which should work for most other older software, not just photo stuff. Substitute your software name in place of Picture Publisher

Picture Publisher 10 will install on Windows 7 64-bit when run on Administrator mode, but when you try to run it, you get an error indicating that Picture Publisher won't run (has a problem).
You can solve this by using Windows Explorer to view the executable and setting these properties:
To get to the properties window, right-click on PP (or your software) and then click "properties".
Now click the "Compatibility" tab.
Click "Change settings for all users"
Select "Run this program in compatibility mode for" - Windows XP Service Pack 3
Select "Disable Visual Themes"
Select "Run this program as an administrator"
Click "Apply" then click "OK" out of all open windows. Now Picture Publisher should run perfectly in Windows 7 64-bit.
Hope this helps!
