Hi Steve, I hope your holiday was good for you. Hopefully after Mike's links you and Hawk know what we were talking about.

Mike, a properly burning coal fire should noy be sotty, a sign that it is not vented properly. It will generally burn hotter than wood, which is an advantage when making toast. And who wants toast tasting of wood.

Hi Mike and thanks for all the 411 and the link. I must say that the crumpet looks like our Thomas's English muffin, tho somewhat darker in color and maybe thereby richer in taste? Anyway, it looks damn delicious and I'll have to try one before long.

Hi Marval and thank you. Indeed, after Mike's helpful link, I am dying to try a crumpet; I just have to figure out where in New York I can find a store which sells it. I guess I'll go on-line and do a search. Wish me luck! Steve

And the pairing with McCoy Tyner on piano brings it to near perfection. Thank you Mat

You might find them in the local supermarket - generally near the rolls and muffins. I like them done in a toaster oven with strips of cheese on top, and perhabs some bacon strips added later - with some chow-chow on top. ATB!

Hi Buchpteclare. Thanks for the tip on where to find crumpets. One question remains, however: what in the hell is "chow-chow"

There are two types I know about. No, wait - three. Green tomato, or red tomato, and a fruit type. It's not sweet, but it's not a pickle type of thing either. I melt strong cheese on the muffun, then add the chow-chow on top. The brand I have here is 'Habitant', though there are others. ATB!
