Canadian and the style would point me to Oscar Peterson, but by 1996 I don't think he was recording so unless the album is a re-release it may not be Oscar.

I din't try to answer this one because it's not my kind of music and I dont know the musicians too well.
But here is a go - is it the dreaded John Coltrane?
I will have one more wild guess Mat. Tommy Smith? I say this mainly because when I last attended a Joe Lovano concert they were together in a Smith led group.
