Further problems with Software, Drivers this time
I was surprised and somewhat annoyed when trying to download a driver, even if one knew exactly which driver one wanted sites would not allow one to just download it, but insisted on downloading "Driver manager" or some similar rubbish.
Having clicked on what I assumed was the driver I wanted, the site then downloaded Driver manager, automatically started installing that, stalled wanting Microsloth NET Framework, which it proceeded to download and install again stalling because that needed an update, by this time a quarter of an hour had elapsed (I had been out of the room having a snack and a cuppa else I'd have killed the farce before it went as far as trying to install Driver Manager).
It's not always easy trying to get drivers from manufacturers, quite a few seem to be outsourcing this, so you get the same or similar "download Driver manager" problem; on the face of it DM sounds a good idea, it scans your PC and tells you which drivers are out of date, when it does it then wants to charge you money to register for the service before it downloads the update.
I was looking for a driver for a USB wireless dongle, so I could get on line from a laptop from anywhere in the house; ideally Windoze should find a driver for a new piece of kit when It's plugged in by searching the web if a CD is not available - wrong, it might search the web, but it's not guaranteed to find one, I suspect it only scans Microsloth's site.
As a matter of interest what is the use of Microsloth's NET Framework, can one manage without it?
